Our family has driven 20 miles, twice a week, for over eight years, to study and practice kajukenbo karate under the kind and compassionate guidance of Situ Rick Cropper. He's one of few seventh degree black belt's in this precise martial art. Cropper takes this art seriously, trains his students hard, and teaches them this life skill in an uncompromising fashion with emphasis on sparring, forms and general mental and physical fitness. We've encouraged friends and family to study under him as well. If searching for a martial arts academy, look no further.
Portland Shotokan is one of the finest and most traditional martial arts schools in the greater Portland area. Bettina Sensei and her husband are both dedicated to teaching the art of Shotokan karate while instilling self-discipline, respect, and honor in each and every student that enters their Dojo. I highly recommend that you visit their school, ask questions and take a class or two. Be ready to enjoy a great workout, learn to defend yourself, and be immersed in one of the finest martial arts culture the world has to offer.
Steven is very kind and patient with me, and showed great martial art techniques and fitness. I wanted to learn more self-defense and was a beginner. I was a slow learner but Steven showed great teachings and professionalism and I appreciate that a whole lot.
My experience working with Bryan Nuro has been everything that I was looking for in training in mixed martial arts. After I had my first practice with Bryan I knew that I was going to be sticking around for a long time. I have been training in private lessons with Bryan for about five months now going three times a week and I feel that I am at the level of someone who has been training twice as long as me. I am now in the best shape I have ever been in and I have learned more than I could have ever asked for. Bryan is a superb coach and I wouldn't be where I am without him . I look forward to every practice and I always leave practice with a great vibe.
Jeff is an excellent martial arts teacher. He takes a concept, like punching or rapier and shows it many ways. He takes a hands on approach and helps students hold the sword. During the last rapier class Jeff moved a little quickly through some material that was very new to some other folks. If he could slow down on explaining some rapier drills, that might be good. But, Jeff makes a difference. I use what I learn in class about martial arts, spatial awareness, and strategy during my day. I enjoy going to Academia Duellatoria
Head instructor is Fabiano Scherner, multiple time world champion Brasilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. Awesome team, has a large number of blue, purple, brown and black belts that left other gyms to train there. Everyone super friendly and really into helping out beginners. Fun place to workout. Also it is in the same building as a weight lifting gym that gives a huge discount
Allow me to be the first to recommend Guru Angie! I always find her training sessions to be fun and informative. She's very patient and presents the material in an easy to understand, step by step manner that doesn't overwhelm. Her self defense techniques are easy to learn but very effective against larger and stronger opponents.
I've known this man for decades... Class act!! Jim Thomas
I've been attending classes at NWFA for many years, and I find myself constantly learning new things. All the people I've had a chance to train with are super friendly, and the instructors are very helpful. Staying motivated has rarely been a problem, and with all the different systems offered there, I feel like I will never run out of things to learn. I have the utmost respect for all the instructors, and highly recommend taking classes here.
