I bring to you over 25 years as a designer (with a Master's Degree in Architecture as well as a BFA in Interior Design)--honing my skills, my eye, my resources. We pre-arranged to meet Marlene before we moved from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Washington. We got her name from Angie's List and she was the first person we met at our new home. My wife and I just retired and we wanted to make our new home all ours and needed help to arrange the space with color and furniture that would fit in the open area of our living room and kitchen area. Marlene met with us the first time for two hours and rescheduled to visit with us a week later to go over her ideas. At that re-visit she showed us many detailed drawings of options to utilize the space and asked us for our input to pick which plan we liked the best. My wife and I were surprised with the drawings, which were done to scale and she also brought color samples that she thought would go with the interior of the house, which the previous owner had put in wood molding throughout and had a checkerboard black and white kitchen floor that I thought might cause a problem, but after she showed us many options the next step was to meet her at a furniture store to pick out what she had planed for us. She e-mailed us that she had visited a store and was excited about the variety of selection they had. We met her a few days later and after 2 hours she had picked out the furniture, the color of the fabrics and before we knew it we were done. This is the first time we have used an interior decorator and I must commend her on a job well done. If not for her consulting we probably would have purchased more than we needed and the colors would have been, well I really don't wish to think what it would have looked like. Marlene has an artist eye and skill for the placement of objects in the space given.

When friends come into our mid-century home, their eyes widen and they immediately ask who we worked with as our interior designer! Marlene is a generous, eclectic spirit and delightful to work with. She is one of the most creative people weve ever met her ability to capture the essence of what you want and make realistic recommendations, for a home you actually can live in, are unparalleled. She has a fun way of mixing elements: furnishings with multiple purpose, floor and window coverings that not only add to the environment but are statements themselves, and lighting sources to properly illuminate it all! Her sketches and drawings are something rarely seen today. She is an artist first and foremost and helps you see what your space will be rather than merely showing you plan view layouts. We were looking for clean, not overtly evident, but asian-inspired design for our family, living, and dining areas as well as a room for my daughter designed around an antique asian opium bed. She understood perfectly what we were after in both circumstances and we now have a beautiful and functional living space, with delightful surprises in just the right places, and my daughter has a room that all girls and most women would envy.

I love my window coverings, drapes and curtains! The design is beautiful and elegant. They are the envy of my neighborhood. I selected beautiful but very expensive silk fabric and Marlene figured out how to utilize this exquisite fabric along with less expensive to keep the costs down. Marlene was also great to work with as I kept changing my mind and she stuck with me with a great deal of patience. It was a fun and rewarding experience.

FAQs

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Over the years, I have found that most people prefer a flat fee for phases of design OR an hourly fee (which I can estimate for them) for all pre-specification work (this may involve a mark-up over net etc.).
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I meet with prospective clients to see if there is a positive connection (greeting of the minds, as it were). This is complementary. If we decide that we want to work together, then I return with a proposal and Letter of Agreement. This gives both of us a confidence in the process to unfold. The first order of business is to determine a working budget which will be in harmony with the client's design objectives. We take photos and measurements, we discuss, I draw, we shop, we purchase and construct, we install and we REJOICE.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I obtained my MASTER of ARCHITECTURE from U.C. BERKELEY. There I studied with the renowned Christopher Alexander: The Nature of Order (his series of books), the patterns which are found in all built things--objects, rooms, cities (from his book, A Pattern Language) etc. I have a BFA in Interior Design from JFK University in Orinda, CA. I am constantly reviewing product information as well as design theory. It is my passion.
