Introduction: My business is knowledge-based, we first make sure that we're up to date on all of the underlying science, and training always comes first. We've also deliberately chosen to stay small, and focus on keeping our overhead low, in order to provide focused, individualized, knowledgeable, and affordable services. For larger projects, we sometimes collaborate with a small group of trusted partners, with whom we have long-standing relationships, and friendships. When they're not necessary, you aren't paying for their upkeep. That lets us stay lean and pass those savings on to you, our customer. Getting to work with people so that they can enjoy the outdoors, and appreciate the largest and most majestic organisms on earth, trees. I love improving the land, and peoples' quality of life at the same time. I also offer landscape design, garden design and installation and related services, like chicken coop, mushroom log, or hugelkultur bed installation, which bring my customers closer in touch with the land. I also really enjoy climbing trees, and the different perspective it brings...and I love sharing that experience with the guided climbs and climbing instruction that I can provide.

Hired on Thumbtack

I sustained a lot of landscaping damage from the ice storm of 2/5/14. In particular, a large limb fell on the power line to my house, and several nearby trees were in danger of falling on to my roof. I placed a request on Thumbtack and within a few hours I was speaking to Jeff on the phone. He made arrangements to visit my home and did so the next day to survey the situation. After evaluating the trees in question, Jeff offered a fair quote of $800 to cut four of them down to their trunks, leaving the debris for me to saw up and remove myself, at my request. The trees were difficult to access and cut safely because of their location - directly next to my house; shed, power line, and other landscaping features below; tucked between a bunch of yews; etc. But Jeff was able to cut them down without incurring any more damage or disruption to my property. All in all, the process took three days, and was done efficiently and to my satisfaction. Beyond being a good arborist, Jeff is also a good conversationalist - knowledgeable and nice guy. Good, professional customer service and contact. Keeps you informed about what is going on, and prompt to answer inquiries through call or text. The latter is very important to me, considering my constant "need to know" impatience. Normally I would do a lot of research and review-reading before picking someone for a service, but I had to choose quickly, without that process, because the situation was emergent. I am glad that Jeff turned out to be a good find on such short notice and without knowing a lot about him beforehand. I will definitely use Jeff for future tree trimming/removal needs... let's just hope it's on a planned basis next time.

I have to give Jeffrey Van Dusen (aka The Tree Nerd) a 'glowing' review. First off, unlike two other tree service professionals that reviewed my challenging job, Jeffrey didn't "wince" at the sight of it. He carefully & quietly surveyed the situation of a 75ft tall, 56 year old Scotch Pine (then deceased for more than a year... and covered w/ Poison ivy clear up to its canopy)!! This poor dead mega-pine was situated in a nearly inaccessible corner of my property, about 2 feet from my north & west fence-lines, surrounded to the south & east by a grove of 20 year old Sassafras trees, with two precious 60 year old ornamental Holly trees within 15 feet of this bad situation. I was preparing myself for a repeat proposed scenario of having to bring heavy "cherry-picker" equipment across my neighbor's prized & pristine Zoysia grass lawn when Jeffrey said, with reassuring confidence, that he could climb the tree and (with the help of his expert rigger, John) bring it down systematically, piece by piece, on MY side of the fence, without damaging my mature Holly or Sassafras trees!! It sounded almost too good to be true, so I anxiously awaited his cost proposal which was extremely reasonable as compared to the 'heavy equipment' people and I couldn't be more pleased. Oh, and did I mention that Jeff and John did the work on an extremely windy and rainy day??

Jeff is a very nice and professional arborist. I received estimates from several people, but Jeff seemed the most knowledgable about the different varieties of trees in our back patio. He was very efficient and thorough. He also helped us by referring a friend who fixed a sinkhole and planted flowers. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs landscaping work.

Owner came out quickly and did an estimate- great price. Four weeks later my request to cut and remove three trees are still standing. Same song and dance updates- my chipper is being repaired. No more updates from the owner. Very disappointing.
