Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: My clients hugely impact the things that I make. When I sit down with a client, I don't come to the table with samples and say, "This is what I can do;" I come with my sketch book and ask, "What do you want your jewelry to look like?" My work is different because I ask questions and make my clients the jewelry that they really want but can find no where else. I like collecting stories. What I like most about my job is that I get to talk to people and hear their stories... their struggles and triumphs and adventures. Jewelry is an incredibly personal purchase because it touches the skin and is worn and showcased. The best jewelry should be a diving board into great stories and conversations. I get to collect stories and turn them into heirlooms and wearable art.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

All the time! I finished my art degree in 2009, but I am constantly learning and growing to better meet my clients needs. I usually take at least 1-2 workshops a year to learn about new materials or techniques in my field. In addition to that, I have a backlog of resources (people or books or other jewelry establishments) to turn to in case my clients have questions that I can't immediately answer.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Ask lots of questions! Bring your own ideas to the table! If you're working with someone who isn't listening to you and trying to meet your needs, then you might consider walking away and working with someone else instead.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

My clients usually only see me on two occasions: when we're co-designing their jewelry and when I'm delivering their jewelry. What they don't see is what happens "behind the curtain." If a client brings me an idea for a piece of jewelry with a material or technique that I've never used before, then I usually have to do research to see if it is physically possible to make that piece of jewelry. THEN, in some instances, I have to experiment or make samples before I work on the actual commission. When you get your awesome, finished piece of jewelry, that finished piece represents a lot of thought and effort and ingenuity.
