FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I do a lot of writing. I write grants. I write copy for a web page. I write a blog and newsletters. I read everything from novels and poetry to entrepreneurship and cooking magazines. Since I work with people who are learning English and who sometimes aren't literate, I am always thinking about how to communicate humanly and effectively. I also see a coach myself, which challenges me to value this type of relationship and be the kind of coach who creates space for a student to be authentic.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
In my day job I'm the Executive Director of a start-up non-profit. It involves long hours, wearing lots of different hats, always learning something new, networking, and fairly dry business writing. Coaching a couple students on the side is refreshing for me. I get to do something I'm really good at. I get to serve rather than lead. College essay coaching is especially fun because it involves helping another person discover and use their own voice.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Students don't usually get to choose their teachers. You can pick your coach, so find one who you feel human around--relaxed, yourself, unashamed, able to take risks or try something new. With most teachers there is an element of performance because part of their job is to evaluate you. You shouldn't feel the need to impress a coach.
