FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I have been working as a summer camp counselor since I was in high school, and my second year in college I had the amazing opportunity to work as a high school tutor for GEAR UP! Appalachia. I immediately loved it and realized that I wanted to continue helping students who need a little extra help.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
The job I am most proud of and probably the one I enjoyed the most was my job as a college preparatory assistant in Berea, Kentucky. I helped high school geometry students who were behind in class by having one-on-one or small group sessions with them as often as necessary. I also helped chemistry students and Spanish students. I found a way to connect with the students, even the ones who did not particularly care if they passed geometry or not. I was also in charge of the after school Culture and Cuisine club, in which we cooked a traditional dish and had a small culture lesson about a different country in the world each week!
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
The best advice I have for someone trying to learn a new (second or otherwise) language is to speak it as much as possible. Having a native speaker--or even just a buddy fluent in the target language--to practice with makes all the difference. Yes, it's good to learn the grammar and as much vocabulary as possible, but after a certain point it becomes redundant. The only way to become fluent is to jump into the language with everything you have!
