Kylah offers a very comfortable environment which is important for nervous people like myself. She was able to plan out our goals, was very flexible with listening to bands I wanted to sing along with for practice, and described how the body is effected when you sing a certain way or how your voice will sound when you do certain things to your body. That extra knowledge is vital if you want to learn to stay healthy and perform strong. Overall, the lesson went very well and we plan to meet again a week from now. Thanks Kylah!

Brigid really made our graduation a spectacular experience! She was extremely professional, easy to work with, open to suggestions, and a BEAUTIFUL violinist. I have gotten the best reviews about graduation, just based on the music. We will definitely hire Bridgid again, if she'll have us, because she made the experience for our graduates.

Loved them! I was hesitant to use a full band or a DJ but "Chido Machine" was like both in one. He did a DJ set with live drums, it was all that we needed to have a great time with a wide variety of genres but a live music vibe!

Gil del Bosque is a skillful teacher and diagnostician with both feet on real-world ground. Gil is a saxophonist performing in the Austin area, which helps keep the focus on *creating the music and sound* the student is seeking. Yes the "academic" information is there too, but the focus is creating the sound and music you want to make. In the first lesson Gil pinpointed critical embouchure issues that made a remarkable change in my practice that week. In each of the next 2 lessons (I've had 3 so far) Gil has seen and corrected issues which made noticeable improvements each time for the week's practice. Quality of sound is paramount to me, and I'm hearing improvements weekly. Realistic steps forward. I'd especially like to mention how flexible and reality-based our working lessons are. There are no achievement expectations - that is, Gil listens to where you are *now* and works from there. It's irrelevant whether it took 2-3 hours of practice a day or 20 minutes every other day to get there -- you are where you are. [Put another way, no wasted time on reviewing your practice schedule; just get on with the next thing.] Assignments may not sound fun or glamorous, but they *are* effective and therefore rewarding because I'm making progress. Gil works easily with the excited kid in me who (finally) has a new tenor sax while keeping the discussion on an adult level. If you want to play music and think you're too old or it has been too long since you last took a look at notes on a staff, I say go with Gil. My last ("real") music lesson was 51 years ago, and my last music class was in 6th grade (almost 50 years ago, when we played soprano recorders for a few weeks). Even so, I'm making progress in creating good sound on my tenor sax.

We can only rave at how great this little band was at my daughter's wedding last May in Austin. David does a great job of communicating and was very flexible with a number of special requests which helped to make it such a great day. They came early, and stayed late, even helping us to pick up afterwards. The music is very precise and FUN!!! Steel Betty played quiet prayerful tunes during the ceremony, and gradually amped up the energy as the festivities followed. Highly recommended! Stephen N.

I run a variety dance band called The Sophisticates based in Austin, TX. Philip and his techs from Head Water have provided consistent, professional service for every gig we've had the last two years. I have dealt with many sound technicians in my 30 years in this business, believe me when I say Philip Ramirez is a rising star in this industry!

About

I'm Sherah, the writer and lead singer for The Fine Souls. My smokey, jazz-inflected vocal croons against a backdrop of guitar, upright bass and jazz drum kit. I specialize in writing beautiful, danceable love songs, and I write from a wide range of Roots genres: folk, vocal and Louisiana jazz, blues, soul, pop and early R&B, so the music never gets boring or repetitious. My melodies are memorable, and the lyrics are vivid, poetic, and romantic, reflecting all the various moods of love. I've even written a song about a couple who's watching the sunset, enjoying the memories of their wedding earlier in the day! We play primarily our own love songs, but we will also learn and play up to 8 of your choice of cover songs, especially if you have particular songs in mind for the first dance, the garter and bouquet toss, or other special moments. Bonus item: For an additional fee, I will write a song for you that's based on your personal love story, and we will record it as a single to give to your guests. We'll also perform this song as the first dance! My musicians are among the very best that Austin has to offer, and we have been or are currently a part of other touring bands. We have performed at various wine bars, coffee shops and restaurants around town, as well as at the Hyatt, the Austin airport on the Ray Benson Stage, and at the Continental Club Gallery. Please visit my Facebook page Sherah & The Fine Souls to see what we're up to!

We hired the Divas and Cavaliers for our wedding in November, 2015. Johnny Bode and the band were simply outstanding. The songs were well played, the lead singer is gifted, and the guests were dancing up a storm from the very beginning until the very end of the night. I still hear from friends and family just how much they loved the band. Johnny Bode is easy to work with and clearly enjoys his work. Running up to the wedding, Johnny, my wife and I, came up with a couple of phenomenal playlists that truly incorporated his knowledge of what gets folks out on the dance floor and our taste in music. In addition, he worked with us creating a very special first dance that went off flawlessly and is now a very special and tender memory. Enjoy, you can't lose.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
