Unbelievable! I posted my project online in the morning. Jim's staff contacted me within hours. Jim came by on his way home from another job and by evening, Jim had new glass in my second-story window. The price was quite fair. I have a 1960s-era aluminum window that had been sealed shut, and while scraping off the caulk, I broke the glass. I needed someone to replace the glass, but more importantly, I needed someone who could find an operator/latch/handle to put the window back in working order. Everyone else I called advised me to "just get a new window." (Why throw away a whole historic window when it can be repaired??) Jim replaced the glass and, as an expert in casement windows, he's now working with his team to find a mechanism to replace the missing operator. What a terrific experience. Not only is he quite knowledgeable, but he's great to work with. Couldn't be more pleased.

We purchased a brand new home and wanted to replace the tile and carpet in the living areas. We had approximately 1,200 sq ft tiled by Delcid's Painting & More. The entire crew was professional and worked diligently during the entire project. They were always on time and even worked after normal hours to get the job done. Even with all of the other million and one expenses that come with a new home, Delcid's Painting and More was very reasonably priced. And for the work the did, it ended up being a bargain actually. We were very pleased with their tile work that we decided to hire them to paint our walls. The painter was a true professional. He rarely used tape and painted straight lines free hand. Overall, we are very happy it all got done, and within budget! Recommending to family and friends.

Adan responded to my custom request for help removing the glass panel in my oven so it could be cleaned. I'd seen some videos on YouTube and it looked like a fairly complicated process. Not to mention what a pain it would be if the glass broke. Adan and I traded messages about the project. I was satisfied that he had the skills and knowledge to help. He was able to come by the same day. The project wasn't as difficult as I feared but I'm really glad that I hired Adan to do it. The oven door is cleaned and reinstalled. Looks great! Thank you!

My daughter and I hired Realtá Remodeling in November 2015 to make repairs to the interior and exterior of our home as we are preparing to sell it and we are so satisfied and impressed with Osman and his team that we are now having second thoughts about selling our home! The remodeling of our home was done absolutely perfectly and on time, everything that was listed in the contract was finished and Osman even made some touches to part of the house that were not included in the contract, which we were grateful for. We had work done to the majority of our house: Master restroom/bedroom (the shower was demolished, a new shower with tile was built, damaged sheetrock was repaired along with plumbing issues in the shower drain, countertops were refinished, leaks under the sinks were fixed, a hole in the bedroom wall was patched, the walls and ceiling were primed and painted and new carpet trim was installed.) Guest restroom (the bathtub was refinished, cabinets were replaced and new wood was installed under the sink where there was a leak, rotten baseboards were replaced.) Living/office/family/laundry room (the walls in each room were primed and painted, ceiling texture was perfectly matched, the wood frame of the windows were sanded, caulked, primed and painted, doors were replaced and painted, holes were patched.) Kitchen (countertops were refinished, new sink was installed, the walls and ceiling were primed and painted.) Exterior (rotten wood was replaced, metal was replaced and welded, both garage doors were replaced, rotten backyard siding was fixed, painting and priming were also done). We are so happy with Realtá Remodeling and Osman that we have referred him to numerous friends and family, my daughter and I highly recommend Realtá Remodeling if you are looking for an honest contractor who works hard to make you happy and follows through with the contract. Thank you Realtá Remodeling, Osman and your staff for making our remodeling process an easy one!

Carlos was easy to work with. He's knowledgeable and trustworthy. He was willing to answer my questions about what the job would consist of. I needed an external back door to the garage installed. He came out to the property to give me a free estimate. I was trying to watch my budget as well. He gave me options and fair prices. After the install, we found out the lock on the handle to the door had broken, most likely from the original door falling off. He was good about going to get a replacement part and fixing it right away instead of coming back another day. In the end, I was happy with the service and price. I would hire him again for future projects.

We hired Innovative Home Repair with two projects in mind. An enclosed back porch and a new storage shed. Zach is a consummate professional along with his crew. The work is fantastic and we came in way under budget compared to the other companies I spoke with. The back porch is amazing ( I will include pictures ) and the storage shed is twice as big as I thought it would for the low price they charged us. The work was so good that we went ahead and hired them for three more jobs. We had them replace all of the windows on the front of the house with energy efficient windows including two 6ft x 24 in. windows . They replaced a rafter inside of our house that had termite damage and they replaced the wood in the front with hardy plank ( or better ). They also extended a metal roof over my wood deck beside the enclosed back porch. These guys are nice and were very family and pet friendly. They were very professional and easy to work with. One thing that stood out is the fact that Zach is always checking in with you and always available for you if you decide to change something. He is also an excellent book keeper which was refreshing. We plan on using them for future projects.

Fredi was very prompt to respond and extremely professional. Within a few hours of me posting the job (window pane replacement), it was already completed! He also took care to bring the right tools, not to leave any broken glass in the house and thoroughly cleaned the new window pane before putting it up. And everything was at a very competitive price. Would definitely recommend Fredi to anyone looking for window replacement/repair etc.

Had a great experience getting replacement windows from Window City. My wife and I needed to replace the 40 year old aluminum framed windows in my father-in-laws house. I received quotes from 5 different window companies. Several companies used high pressure sales tactics, and one even said I had to sign the contract before they left in order to get their best price. John from Window City is a low pressure sales guy. He talked about the merits and features of his windows and explained the installation process used by his installers. I selected John and Window City because John had the lowest price of all the quotes, he didn't push me to make a decision, and I liked the installation method he described. Several of the companies break the glass so they can remove the window faster. The Window City installation team uses a blow torch to heat and remove the old caulk or putty, then removes each glass pane without breaking it. Jose is the head installer, and he has been installing windows for 20 years. Several window companies use a saw to cut the old window frame out after breaking the glass, and they mentioned there could be some Sheetrock damage on the inside of the house. The Window City installation team collapses the old window frame and removes it without causing any damage to the interior Sheetrock. Jose measures the windows prior to ordering, and the new replacement windows fit like a glove in the opening. After screwing the windows in place, the windows are caulked on both sides. Jose's crew covers the inside floor and furniture with tarps or plastic, and does a thorough clean up after. The team removes all labels from the new windows and cleans them inside and out. I am highly impressed with the new windows and great installation, and will definitely call John if I need replacement windows in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
