Introduction: I teach piano by ear to student ages 10 and up, including adults. (I also provide DJ services and equipment at private events.) Music is a language. Think about how we learn language - we speak and listen for years before we ever read and write! We study using real music, and I do my best to take into account the music you’re interested in. I don’t just teach piano, but how music works - the theory that goes along with it. But don’t let that word scare you! My goal is to make lessons easygoing and fun while still pushing you to be better. We do eventually cover reading music, but only after we build a solid understanding of how music works. I teach out of my apartment in central downtown Houston. I can also teach online.

Andy is a great teacher. He constructs your lessons according to your ability. I had taken lessons years ago but remembered many aspects of piano playing. If you can demonstrate a certain level, Andy doesn’t linger there just to make money. He incorporates the genre of music you enjoy, at you level, while continuing to teach the basics of music and music theory. Andy is patient, reassuring and has a great personality. He evaluates your progress objectively. But no matter what, he points out the positive. He is a great teacher.

Andy is an extremely well-versed pianist in many genres of music. Anything I bring to him, he can breakdown to help me to understand. He has helped me to modernize my playing from strictly classical to having a better understanding of modern and jazz concepts. I'm learning to listen and play what I'm hearing, rather than just relying on written music. He describes it as "learning to speak a language, rather than having a translator tell you what to say." I am learning to approach playing in a new way that has made learning new music much easier and more interesting.

My daughter and I have both been taking piano lessons from Andy for a few years. He is a wonderful teacher and very patient with his students. He takes time to explain the theory behind the music. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We have a chat where I discover what music you like, what you want to play, where your level is already (former lessons etc.) and then we dive right in to learning! (For online sessions we also take some time to talk about a good camera / audio setup.)
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I took a couple of years of private piano when I was 15, and later some college work, but most of my learning has been “on the job” as I played in church for 21 years, in multiple styles.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
One of my students is a talented vocalist is always writing new music. She didn’t know how to arrange and record the music, so together with Twin Doves Studio, we produced six songs over the course of several months and uploaded them to Spotify and other networks. I can’t post the link here because of Thumbtack’s rules, but look her up under the name Elsa Grace. She has titles like “Wrong Turns”, “Here I Am”, and “Talk Awhile”
