Our firm differs in the fact that we are holistic in our approach. Anyone can throw numbers into the tax return. However, we look for deductions, advise you of strategies that would benefit you beyond the current tax years. We have a financial planner and lawyer that we partner with so we can prepare a complete financial package from beginning to end. Our staff is well trained each year on the changes in the tax code. First, let me say Wendy is one the nicest people I have ever dealt with. Also, I believe she is very knowledgeable about tax laws and procedures. However, neither she nor her staff have been very reliable in communications. If you call and leave a message you should expect to follow up several times before you get an answer. The same goes for emails, too. Also, when she prepared forms for our company's tax filings it was quite common that we received the forms on the last day to file. Within the past 18 months I have received several letters from the IRS stating they had not received information from us for projects that Wendy worked on. Now, I am having to pay another CPA to follow up and correct what we paid Wendy and her staff to do. I think Wendy is great on presentation. But she comes up short on delivery.

Not sure who this client may be, but we never want to have a client in that situation. I do not like filing at the last minute as it makes it stressful for the client and us as well! We did not have a client contact stating that they had any issues with tax returns. And if if the client did have an issue, we would have followed up on it until it was cleared with the proper jurisdictions. However we did not have that opportunity. We do have two staff answering phones at all times so that a client always speaks to a person when they call and does not get voice mail. However, I know things can get quite hectic at tax time, especial since this review was written 4 days prior to the March 15th deadline. So if there was a delay, it was not intentional on our part as we were probably assisting clients with last minute emergencies on the the March 15 deadline.

When I first met with Wendy, I was encouraged. She seemed professional and responsive, however, when I checked in 6 weeks later, everything changed. She said my returns had been completed by her junior accountant and were sitting on her desk waiting for her signature. A major portion of the job I hired her for was to also review my previous two returns as I had been retroactively paid a large amount of income that should have been paid across the previous three years. Since it apparently could be claimed as income this year or retroactively over the years it should have been paid, it was important to determine which filing approach was preferable. This is important to know because my current return couldn't have been completed without the others also being done. So, I inquired about the others and the corresponding assessment. This communication took place via email. We went back and forth over the course of 10 minutes. I first inquired about the status of my returns. Then, suddenly when I inquired how one return could be done without the others, she went radio silent. I waited for a week and again emailed her for an update but didn't get a reply. I waited another week and called. Her assistant answered and said she was on the other line. I asked that she call back asap but again nothing. I was dumbfounded. The emails had been friendly yet after six weeks of answering her junior accountant's questions and sending information and documentation, she just completely left me out to dry only a few weeks before tax day. She could've said, gee I forgot, give me some more time or I need more time, can we file for an extension, but to say she could do the job, waste over a month of my time and the. just stop responding with no indication as to why she couldn't get it done, well, that's completely unprofessional and disrespectful.

We did meet with this client and started the 2015 tax return. Between February 1st and February 17 my staff and client communicated getting additional information to calculate the 2015 tax return. Shortly after that we had the tax return prepared with all the income in the 2015 tax return. Communicated with the client through email that we had finished that part and we could start working on what the incremental effect tax effect would be if the monies had been during the 3 years vs all at once in 2015. Client did call and ask if we had completed the second part. My staff answered the phone and communicated that I was in meetings with other clients and I would have to call him back. I did respond to his email that he followed up with that Sunday. This would be March 20. That we had worked on the calculation. However the client no longer wanted the work. This is 4 weeks prior to the tax deadline. We apologized for his inconvenience as we needed time to do a 3 year calculation scenario. That was communicated through an email updating the client as to the status two weeks before he withdrew. I followed up with an email on March 20th to the client that he owed for Federal and California taxes and the amounts so that the client could take appropriate steps to complete an extension accurately and pay his taxes by April 18th. This is to keep the client from being "hung out to dry." If a client's tax return is not completed by March 31, we start offering extension to the clients so we can mitigate any penalties or interest for filing or paying the taxes based on the information received from the client. However the client withdrew prior to this date. We wish the client well and provided him with the tools to file the extension properly.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
When looking for a CPA, make sure the individual has an actual CPA certificate in good standing and is registered to do business with the State Accountancy Board.
