I would highly recommend the Law Office of Michael Rubin to anyone who is in need of an excellent family law attorney. He works efficiently to delivers results on your case. I had to hire Mr. Rubin for an enforcement/modification issue and so far everything is going exactly like he said it would. During our consultation he was very honest about what he believed the outcome would be based on the information I provided and didn’t tell me exactly what I wanted to hear in order to get my money. He has a genuine concern and always fights for what is in the best interest of the child. Michael is very knowledgeable when it comes to the law and is always prepared when we go to court. He always keeps in contact with me about updates on my case and always responds immediately to my inquiries. If you are wanting an attorney who will represent you in a professional manner to make sure your rights aren’t stomped on, then Michael Rubin is definitely the attorney to hire.

The reason I chose Christie is she and I attended law school together and I remembered that she was a very good student in school. When I was deciding whom to choose to represent me in my divorce, I wanted to find someone who was not only knowledgeable about family law but also someone I could trust and give me the personal touch. When I found out that Christie was practicing family law, it was a no-brainer decision for me. She has kept in touch with me in a very timely manner, been very professional, and her fees are more than reasonable. I would highly recommend Christie for anyone needing a family law attorney.

Nary Law Firm is very professional in their work. They provide legal strategies that are unknown to me. It has been a great pleasure having their service because you know deep in yourself that you can count on Len Nary. It has been a traumatic experience for me but Nary Law Firm made sure that I can fight for my rights and for what is right. All in all it is a great experience.

I never, ever expected to be looking for a divorce attorney, not after 33 years so when my husband found someone else, I was overwhelmed and fighting panic. I have a long term chronic illness that has prevented me from working for the last 20 years, am self employed with a very small annual income and am not exactly hireable with all that and being over 55 years old. I was terrified and overwhelmed with worry about how I would be able to support myself going forward. Ms Loyd not only offered me much needed legal counsel, her calm and patient attitude gave me time to calm my mind, focus and ask for the information that I needed to know. Divorce is complicated, on top of the emotional devastation and upheaval. Ms Loyd was patient and kind with me, even when I was asking something for the third time. She was completely honest with me in tempering my expectations, yet still helped me get a very fair settlement and needed security for my future. If your life is going to be turned upside down, I would not hesitate to recommend Ms Loyd to help you find your new 'normal'.

Ross Tew is a terrific estate planning attorney with reasonable rates! He handled our complete Trust, Wills, Powers of Attorney, and more in a professional, timely manner. He took the time to come to our house and fit into our busy schedule and even came to our location for signing papers. He answered all our questions in a way we could understand legal issues and gave us confidence in everything he did. He is not always easy to reach, because he values his family time, but came through for us, even during the holidays.

I hired Holly to file divorce against my husband. She was very reasonable and efficient in handling the whole process of initial filing, mediation and finalization of the divorce. She gave me a very realistic picture of what to expect and kept me focused on what was important. She unfortunately had to endure the wrath of my now ex-husband who refused to hire an attorney. She is very professional with all people she encounters. Holly is tough attorney that knows the law, what to expect and how to get the result you want quickly and efficiently!

Overall I had a very positive experience with the Lankford Law Firm. I was arrested for a second DWI in December of 2016 when I found Chris Lankford on this site. I went to a consultation where he walked me through the entire process and what different outcomes and scenarios I could expect depending on what the prosecution had as evidence. The pricing was fair and he seemed upfront and honest, so I hired him that day. Over the course of the next several months, he and his legal assistant kept me in the loop the entire time during the process. At each court date he explained to me what the other side had and what my options and choices were. He let me know my realistic chances of winning in a jury trial and ultimately left it in my hands to decide what to choose. I ended up with what I considered a very favorable plea deal considering the large amount of evidence against me. I would recommend him to others as a criminal defense attorney.

Words cannot express the gratitude I have for Courtney. I contacted Johnson, Loyd, & Schmitz via phone out of desperation and I received a phone call back from Courtney within minutes. I was immediately put at ease by speaking with her regarding my case. At that moment I knew I had to hire her. She has been nothing but attentive and extremely responsive since day one and is a warrior in the courtroom. She has made this difficult time a lot easier on my kids and I. I highly recommend this firm to anybody looking for a family law attorney.

After being involved in an automobile accident and having worked for a personal injury attorney there was no better law firm than Ramey Law Firm to represent me. I know from experience that Hardin Ramey does his best to get you every penny you deserve and never takes more than the client. From the start I knew I was in good hands. I’ve had close friends whom I referred to Ramey Law Firm. Those friends sought out another attorney and regretted it in the end. They complained of not being able to speak to their attorney and when their case settled, the attorney took more of the settlement then them. It was heart breaking to hear this from them. I will always appreciate and respect Mr. Ramey for what he does for people going through a difficult time and refer everyone I know to Ramey Law Firm. He cares about his clients and is one of the best, truthful and honest attorneys in Dallas, TX.

I had an amazing experience with Ify. She’s very attentive and she answered all my questions. She made me feel like I was one of her friends or a family member which I loved because we connected instantly and her aura was amazing. I have worked with lawyers before and some was about the money and their time but with Ify, she made sure I was taken good care of. I will definitely work with her again.

A friend referred me to Jeff after I shared with her that my case was exceptionally complicated and since then he has been by my side for over two years. During that span, my ex husband has had three attorneys, all with different ideas of legal maneuvers they could use to beat Jeff, yet here I am in an even stronger position than when I first hired him. I have found Jeff to be a master at strategy, excellent at communication and incredibly loyal throughout this entire process. I read recently that most people go through 2-3 attorneys during a typical family law case, but I cannot imagine having an attorney other than Jeff. I’m sure many lawyers can handle simple cases just fine, but if your case has as many moving parts as mine, I cannot stress enough that Jeff is your guy.

Chris Harding is a Dallas family attorney with integrity, high regard for his clients and the ability to not only address issues at hand, but to protect future best interests as well. Mr. Harding has represented me over the last two years in a case where my top priority was the protection of my two very young children. Chris was prompt in responding to emails, thorough in explaining the laws as they pertained to my case, and vigilant in the courtroom building my case and presenting facts resulting in a favorable resolve for me and my kids. As a woman and a single mother, I cannot express my gratitude to Chris and his staff enough for always having the best interests of my children (and myself) at heart. Chris' knowledge of the boundaries and limitations within the family legal system allowed him to always stay two steps ahead of the opposing party resulting in a "win" that satisfied both those boundaries and my personal requests now and for the future of my family. During a time where so much was as stake for me, personally, and there were more curveballs thrown my way than I could count, Chris was unyielding in his efforts to guide me through the process, strategically work my case, and get us here to the finish line. Chris Harding is an attorney you can trust, he is well respected and very good at what he does. Thank you, Chris.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good real estate lawyer?

If buying or selling property feels overwhelming and the thought of finding a good real estate lawyer seems daunting, you’re in luck. There are some simple steps to follow for finding a trustworthy, affordable real estate lawyer to help with your property and legal needs.

  • Determine what kind of real estate lawyer you need. Many states require a real estate attorney to handle sale closing documents. For more complex matters such as a real estate deal gone awry or foreclosure, you’ll want to find an attorney who has successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Look for online reviews of real estate lawyers in your area. Verify that they have proven experience closing or winning cases like yours and that they are in good standing with the state bar association.
  • Choose two or three lawyers to interview. Many offer a free consultation to learn about your case and provide information about rates. For standard real estate closing services, in-depth interviewing might not be necessary.
  • Ask about their rates and whether they charge by the hour or provide services for a flat fee. Ask whether a retainer is required, and what the total bill should be for a case like yours.
  • Ask for a write-up of the services that will be covered by the projected costs.
  • Make sure you like the real estate agent and they treat you with respect. Confirm whether they or another person will be working on your case and make sure you’re comfortable with all members of their team.
  • Pay the retainer and hire your lawyer.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What does a real estate lawyer do?

A real estate lawyer represents their client’s best interest in all matters related to the sale, purchase and ownership of real estate. They are experts in real estate law. In states that require a real estate lawyer to close home sales, the lawyer must review and finalize all documents before the deal can be legally completed. Real estate lawyers also help clients legally protect their rights when entering, exiting or renegotiating a real estate deal. You can hire a real estate lawyer as an individual or as a business. A real estate lawyer can help with negotiation, addressing mortgage fraud, managing foreclosures and bankruptcy, transfers of titles and deeds, property ownership disputes, zoning issues, creating a co-ownership contract for joint purchase of a property, and much more. Real estate lawyers can also protect you from issues that result when a known problem was not properly disclosed by the previous owner. Overall, real estate lawyers are an added cost when it comes to buying and selling property, but they also ensure your best interests are met, and that you and the people you are doing business with comply with the law.

What kind of lawyer does wills?

No one likes talking about death, but it’s better than leaving your children or siblings to sort out your estate. A clearly planned will can make the time of mourning easier for everyone. An estate attorney will develop a legal will, create trusts on your behalf, and ensure the proper execution of your estate after you pass away.

Family attorneys and estate attorneys, also called probate and wills attorneys, can each prepare wills. The type of lawyer best suited to prepare your will depends on your situation. Most family attorneys provide services to prepare basic wills, including bequeathing property and personal items to family or naming a guardian for minor children. However, estate attorneys specialize in preparing wills in more complex situations. Consider hiring an estate attorney if you:

  • Have a large number of assets, especially those subject to estate taxes
  • Want to create a trust, such as allowing a spouse to live in your home until he or she dies and then leaving it to your children, or set up long-term care for a beneficiary
  • Have an ownership stake in a business
  • Expect someone to contest your will
  • Want to disinherit your spouse
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
