Introduction: I teach a varied and complete approach to jazz piano encompassing all styles and influences from Art Tatum to Brad Meldhau. We look at solos and tunes, breaking down the harmonic and melodic structures. Drawing from my teachers, I use ideas that I studied from Jaki Byard on Errol Garner and Art Tatum. From Harold Danko, modal concepts which Chick Corea used. From Charlie Shoemake, Straight ahead jazz soloing and chord voicings. From Lyle Murphy, jazz composition and harmony which influenced Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Oscar Peterson who also was a student. Studio piano and the art of playing a ballad from Terry Trotter. Using all of these influences, I carefully watch students to see if they are swinging and using correct musicianship including rhythmic precision. You may find me on You Tube. Just search Tim Lyddon

Wasn’t sure what to think about online lessons, but it’s turned out great. Tim’s a nice guy and has helped me progress pretty quickly. He’s also flexible, which is great when you’re a trying to balance a 9-5 and everything else.

Tim has been a great teacher, in my opinion. I’ve been working with him for about 7 months, as of the time of this review. I came to him as a beginner piano player, 42yrs old - no experience. Although I am considerably below the experience level of many of Tim's other students, he has developed a course method for me to get up to speed on basics. Here’s a list of things I appreciate about Tim’s lessons: - He’s pretty patient during lessons when I’m not getting something (probably the most critical factor in a teacher) - He assigns appropriate amount and type of material for my skill level - He provides good constructive criticism and holds me accountable for working out details in my assignments - He shows me examples of how things in my assignments could, or should be played - His ear is pretty incredible…hears notes and calls them out even when not looking at my hands. - He provides some ear training in lessons - He clearly knows a large amount of music theory, and is pretty good at explaining it as it relates to lessons - His rates are reasonable - His personality is pretty laid back - When I started I couldn’t play any songs, but I think I have worked through 20 to 25 songs now.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I ask some questions to see what they are really interested in doing. Then I try to show them the way to improvement and perhaps moving towards a goal. We try to keep things realistic. I am patient and try to identify the students strengths and weaknesses so as to lean on the strengths at times while bringing up the weak areas
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a masters of music degree from the Manhattan school of music and a BA from csla. I have also studied from some great teachers such as jaki byard(jazz piano)Charlie shoemake (jazz improv),terry trotter (studio, jazz and classical), spud Murphy(composition and arranging), Clare Fischer(jazz piano) , Milton stern(classical piano). How did you get started doing this type of work?
When I was 15, someone needed jazz piano lessons. So I decided to help them even though I had not really taught before. I was also asked to play a few jobs around that time
