FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Several years ago while still working full time (and living in the Virgnia, Washington D.C. area) I was introduced to pet-sitting when I substituted for a friend who could not commit to an assignment. This opened my eyes to a whole new and delightful experience. After going into semi-retirement and having more time available to me, I picked it back up and have really enjoyed the experience. Plus, it is my observation that anyone that treats their pet well is just as mindful of being courteous to the pet-sitter also. I have met some of the most delightful new friends and value the acquaintances.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Most of my pet-sitting has been with dogs (large, medium and small sizes), cats, and birds. The home duties usually include collecting the mail and paper, light lawn and garden care, watering of plants (indoor and outdoors), and special deliveries (some of my clients have businesses in their homes) and, if requested, driving the pet to the groomer.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
One cat that became particularly "skiddish" with the new person in the home (myself), I was able to entice out of his shyness and hiding in the closest to feel comfortable and safe around me. Also, a different pet-owner had a cat diagnosed with diabetes and I administered its daily insulin shots. There was also the rescue dog that I learned to "handle" while walking him. (He was large, strong, and quite reactive to everything - cars, other animals being walked, squirrels running up the trees, etc.) Learning to "handle him" to maintain control was something I was proud of.
