Introduction: First of all I love teaching! I play different styles with the violin, I perform often in Salt lake City with jazz ensembles, Folk ensembles and the Salt Lake Symphony. Violin is my passion, I have been playing since I was 6 year old. I studied at the Conservatory of Music in Santiago Chile, I have lived in the U.S. for the past 36 years , playing with the Brockport Symphony in New York, The San Francisco State University Symphony where I have a Bachelor degree in Music Performance and now with the Salt Lake Symphony. Bands which I play currently are: The Alan Michael Band which was dominated in January 2016 as the best Jazz Band in SLC. Red Rock Rondo a folk ensemble, which won 2 Regional Emmis in 2010, one for the music and one for a PBS Documentary about the people of the Zion National Park Area in Southern Utah, and The Emily Merrill Group. I have recorded with many groups here in the U.S and in South America. When my students learn and progress, when I realize that a student loves to play and learn. I also enjoy a non judgemental approach. I am very patience and my focus is working to achieve a good sound and to find your own voice with the violin. Because I hold a Master degree in Social Work, working 10 years in the field (from the University of Utah) I have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. I enjoy teaching children and adults.

Flavia is so knowledgable and versatile. She adapts her lessons so well to where the student is and is kind a gentle with my sensitive 9 yo. We have loved having her as a teacher.

Flavia is a welcome change from our previous experiences. Our child is already reaping the benefits from her creative teaching style--his tone has already improved tremendously! She is able to teach children AS individuals-- she adapts her lessons to the way our child learns best. Her background in classical music (our child's emphasis) coupled with her experiences in many other genres (folk, jazz, rock) enable her a certain flexibility that our other teachers lacked. As an active musician, Flavia is not only able to teach traditional methods, but is able to offer insights and techniques not commonly taught. Flavia is a kind, warm person who has made our shy child feel secure and comfortable.

Let me start by saying I have been taking lessons with Flavia for about 6 months now and she has been fantastic. I began taking lessons with another instructor for 2 years, and felt good about my progress. However, after a few months with Flavia, I felt like I was starting to really advance with the violin! Her emphasis on honing technique and the basics, combined with her willingness to teach improvisation as well as her constant encouragement to try those difficult pieces has allowed me to realize substantial progress while continuing to grow my love for this instrument! She genuinely loves teaching students how to play and it shows. As a beginner adult student, I also appreciate the fact she doesn't scold when the wrong notes get played, and takes time to teach some of the theory that goes with the music. Flavia is patient, enthusiastic, and a great teacher, especially if you're looking to play styles beyond classical.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My first class/consultation is free. I charge $55.00 an hour at my studio, $40.00 for 45 minutes and $30.00 for 30 minutes.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Bring your violin if you have one, assess your level, perhaps playing a piece so that we can see where to go next. Talk about methods, style, time available.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelors degree in violin performance. I have a Masters degree in Social Work, worked for 12 years with children and adults, using music as a tool for healing. When I travel outside of Salt Lake City, I take violin lessons with diverse teachers around the country. I perform in concerts often. Attends seminars, workshops in the advising field.
