He did a wonderful job at my wedding. His announcing was great, met & exceeded my needs, and was a genuinely nice person! I would recommend him for any event!! I asked for certain wording on announcements, asked for specific songs, gave him genres to play during certain times, and let him decide for dancing music. He did all of that and did it well! He not only knows music, he lives music. I found him on this site and when I saw 40+ five star reviews I thought I had found someone good. Now I totally agree and understand what everyone was raving about. I never write reviews, but he totally deserves a great review!! Please, please choose him for your wedding or other event. He's totally worth it!! I also did his lights and they were awesome! Everyone loved him!

Let me start off by saying that it has been an honor and privilege learning from Sam. He is an amazing singer and an incredible teacher! I had previously taken vocal lessons from another instructor, but I wasn't too glad with the teaching method. I began taking lessons from Sam after reading the positive reviews on his profile. After my first class with Sam, I knew that I had made a good decision. After a couple weeks, I've seen major improvements in my voice quality, breathing technique, and vocal dynamics. In addition, I've started to sing with more emotion and connect with songs at a level that I didn't know existed. I'm excited to continue learning from Sam and I cannot be happier! Sam's very knowledgeable in all aspects of music, and his experience with soul, jazz, blues, and contemporary music really resonates. I believe what makes Sam an amazing teacher is his ability to connect with his students - he's very passionate about teaching and he makes it his goal to take his students to the very top. I trust in Sam to help me reach my goal because I know that Sam trusts in me. If singing is your passion, I highly encourage you to take lessons from Sam - he will help you find your voice! - Gurpreet

Don knows his stuff, he's easy to get along with and overall a really nice guy. He has an impressive repertoire of musical skills and a lifetime of experience in music to draw from. As far as instruments he can play a little bit of everything, he can basically teach you any instrument you'd find in a regular rock band, folk, country, pop, blues etc. He's probably most proficient on the guitar and piano but he also knows quite a lot about vocals. If you struggle with theory he does a great job demystifying some of the fundamentals of music theory that are useful to beginners. Whether you're an absolute beginner or long time musician Don will be able to help you out. Highly recommend.

Peter is an exceptionally experienced musician with experience that not only validates his abilites but places him among the elite. Peter has worked with bands including the Who, Twisted Sister, Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) and my personal favorite, Elton John. As a "newbie" to the field of music, I can assure you that John exhibits exceptional patience as well as the ability to make the complex seem simple. Whether new to music or an experienced professional, I highly recommend you speak to Peter before making a final decision. FIve stars!

Chris is my daughter's flute teacher. She is a professional flute player as well as a nice, patient, supportive, amazing teacher and person. My daughter plays in the middle school band. Chris help boost her confidence in playing the flute and teach her about music. They play many duets which is not only fun but very educational in my daughter's flute development. Chris is very knowledgeable of the audition requirements for music students preparing for more advanced opportunities. My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed lessons and learning with Chris. Chris is also very flexible and friendly. She is challenging, yet fun. Very excited to see how lessons progress! I would definitely recommend her to anybody looking for a flute instructor. Thank you Chris :))

    About

With fusing elements of pop, psychedelic rock, trip-hop, electronica, jazz, and rhythm and blues, this diverse, six-piece band from Washington, D.C. challenges audiences and defies easy categorization. Spanning the middle ground between soulful and experimental, the powerful rhythm section of Tommi Nathan (bass) and David Ray (drums) lays the foundation for Liora Valero's provocatively phrased, blues-tinged melodies. Ethereal harmonic arrangements, coupled with chunky rock rhythms provided by Stephen Baker (keyboards/guitar), Avi Elisar (lead guitar), and Regina Fiorentini (sax/keyboards), add the emotional backdrop for the lead singer's intense, but heartfelt lyrics. Satori Trova made its start in 2008 when Liora, Tommi, and Avi first got together to hang out and play some songs. Since then, the band has transformed into a serious but genuinely unique ensemble. Called "a band to keep your eye on in 2012", they have headlined DC venues, such as The Rock and Roll Hotel and The Velvet Lounge numerous times, and were finalists for The Deli Magazine's "Best Emerging Artist" award earlier this year. Most recently, they have been getting an airplay on local radio stations, including DC101, WMUC, and WRGW, and will release their debut EP later this spring. We're one of DC's best new bands available for your next event.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
