Introduction: Next Step Language Is LEARNER CENTERED and uses EXPERIENCE, CLARITY, FUN AND THE OPTIMAL USE OF THE TARGET LANGUAGE All Next Step courses and tutoring is tailored to reach the goal of the learner. At the beginning of any language learning activity, we will sit down and discuss that goal. Some goals that have been reached so far are; for example, passing tests, getting very good over all grades, using a language to study abroad and general enjoyment. Because of my many years of experience and my knowledge of language acquisition, I am able to explain the salient points of a language so clearly that there is little room for misunderstanding. One of my bosses also told me that I have a ‘talent’ for knowing where my learners need help. People have often used the word ‘talent‘ to describe my teaching. I have the experience of learning and teaching four different languages. I understand the teaching of these languages inside and out. I love learning and teaching languages, and I believe that learning is a pleasure. Studies show that enjoyment increases learning ability. That is one of the reasons that I incorporate fun activities in my teaching. Fun activity is also the perfect place to use the target language in the most meaningful way. When the target language is used for real communication, the LANGUAGE IS BEING SPOKEN—hey, guess what? Your made it. So what’s great about Next Step? It has been a proven vehicle for reaching languages goals for over three decades. Each learner success is a source of pride. 2. What do you love about teaching languages? Everything. I love setting up goals with people and watching them achieve it. I love sharing something with others that I do well. I love watching how people deal with new information, and then seeing the light bulb go on. I love sharing a sense of accomplishment with my clients. I love learning. I love speaking languages. Everything. I love setting goals with people and watching them reach them. I love sharing something with others that I do well. I love watching how people deal with new information and then seeing the light bulb go on. I love sharing a sense of accomplishment with my clients. I love learning. I love speaking languages.

I’ve met lots of people that are multilingual, but none that have the command of speaking and writing several languages that Yolanda Goss has. I was fortunate enough to meet Yolanda when I was an undergraduate in college. While I was satisfied with passing three terms of French, she was mastering that and more – taking courses in grammar, German, and working on a project where she taught English as a second language. My relationship proved very fortunate when I was recommended for a scholarship to attend a German university, where I would be taking undergraduate level courses at the University of Goettingen. This was a competitive scholarship and at the time, I only had one semester’s worth of German. I needed to learn as much German as I possibly could and I knew that Yolanda could help me. Her plan was that during my senior undergraduate year I would skip straight from the first semester to the third semester. It turned out that I would be accepted in the third semester German class if I could prove mastery of the second semester through a spoken and written exam. Our goal was to pass that exam with Yolanda preparing for the grammar, vocabulary and speech component during the summer break. German is not a straightforward language with its three genders and tricky prepositions, but Yolanda made it seem easy, often illustrating her points with information from other languages. Long story short, I passed my entrance exam to third semester German with flying colors. My accomplishments in qualifying for third-semester German were certainly noticed and I was able to win my scholarship and go overseas. Furthermore, when I arrived at the University of Goettingen I passed the German comprehension exam with high marks on the very first attempt. I credit that achievement to Yolanda. Second semester German deals with future tenses and subjective constructions; it’s beyond introductory phrases and conversational vocabulary. Yolanda helped me build the foundation to put it all in perspective. I’ve always been impressed with Yolanda’s ability to make learning languages seem simple. She has incredible patience and a real love for learning and teaching. I think she’s a great resource for anyone needing an instructor, teacher or tutor and I give her a heartfelt recommendation.
