Check the providers reputation in the business community - not only with current clients, but also with other professionals. Those who handle the finances of a company should have connections with banking individuals, financial advisors, benefits specialists and the like. This will also let you know that your provider is well connected. This is important because they can assist you in selecting the right individuals to service other related areas of your business that are imperative for business growth and longevity. Lastly, you want a provider that is easy to talk with and explains things on a level that you can understand and that will work with you exercising patience.
