FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I decided to start editing as a freelancer after several years of teaching at the university level. I had many students who were obviously very sharp and in command of the basic tenets of the course, but simply could not make themselves understood in writing. I found a similar problem at a different level in my work as an assistant editor on an academic journal. Many promising articles lack the polish they need to succeed, regardless of the interesting and complex ideas they offer. These experiences combined prompted me to start offering my editorial services to clients.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Find an editor from whom you think you can learn, and vice versa. I do not just mean someone with a high level of expertise. If an editor wants to change any of your words, you should feel free to ask why. I think of it almost like looking for a medical doctor; look for an editor with whom you think you would be comfortable exchanging ideas.
- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
That a good editor wants to polish writing, but also carefully preserve the voice of the author. Good editing is not a matter of cramming writing into narrow confines of grammatical rules. Though the rules are important--and I respect them--I focus on making sure my clients' ideas and style shine.
