Hired on Thumbtack

Awful company that ultimately caused damage to my new deck and cost me additional money to repair their terrible craftsmanship. I hired Kalyn to clean, stain and seal parts of a new deck that we had installed. The deck flooring itself is Trek. The only cedar parts that Kayln was hired for included a privacy screen, lattice and pergola. After a little rescheduling due to weather Kalyn sent someone we never met before out on Father's Day Sunday at 11am. This new guy Kayln sent had zero clue what was previously discussed between us. I should have recognized this huge red flag and fired them immediately on the spot. He had no intentions on cleaning the deck until I asked him about it. Since the deck was new, there was no need to pressure wash it. All it needed was some light sanding in areas. This guy said he would have to go get his sander which took him another hour, so now it's high noon and the sun is laserbeaming down. He spent 10 minutes sanding, and then started staining with a brush before I even knew it. It took him less than four hours to ruin everything he stained. He left visible brush strokes and globs of pooling splotches EVERYWHERE. Lucky for us he only did the lattice and one section of the privacy screen, not the entire thing, and not the pergola. Thank God! I called Kayln in horrific disbelief over what this piece of shit had done to our new deck. Kayln asked for pictures, the same ones I'm posting here, for which he responded "unacceptable". Kayln then came out the next morning with another guy (Dan?) who said they were also embarrassed and angry. Kayln swore to me he would correct the issue and guaranteed me I would have a beautiful product at the end. Liar! The next morning, Tuesday, Kayln and Dan show up and started stripping the stain. According to them there was no option now but to pressure wash those areas. UNREAL! More bullshit lies about not causing damage, and like an asshole I trusted them to know what they're doing. WRONG! They blew stain/wood debris everywhere! They plastered debris all over my potted plants, tables and other sections of the privacy screen itself that were still to be stained. They pressure washed it so hard that it caused obvious distress to the new wood and they didn't even get all the stain off. Kalyn then said the wood needs to dry for a few days but he would return the next day for more touch up before ultimately returning to bleach the boards. Kalyn arrived late into the next evening. Again he was apologetic and actually told me they fired the guy that did the staining because of how embarrassed they were. I do not believe him. Kayln then told me that they decided to hire another company themselves to clean/stain/seal the deck in their place. Shocked, I ask what was the availability and was told he would need to check. This is now a week after their first failed attempts to fulfill the agreement. Kayln text me the next evening saying it would be 3 more months!?!? At this moment I was pissed, however never once lost my cool with Kayln. And although I was extremely angry, when I told Kayln this was unacceptable and asked him to remind me of why he accepted the job in the first place, he became defensive and threatened to not fix their mistakes. It was obvious he no longer cared about any experience we had now. Based on their craftsmanship I would never allow them to use bleach on my Trek decking. They would only caused more damage based on their track record. I fired him and told him never to return to my property. He will say everything you want to hear until it no longer benefits him. I am now in a contract with another more expensive contractor to repair their work and complete the job correctly. I am submitting complaints to their insurer, LnI, and anywhere else I can to spread awareness. I wouldn't hire them to do anything. Does this look like it's worth $1500 to you?

We feel honored to leave a 5-star review for K & K Construction. What a positive, recent experience we’ve had with our deck extension and design project! Brad and Kalyn held our hands throughout the project and were very much hands-on with every step, which is a PLUS. (Unfortunately, we’ve learned over time that contractor management is not always onsite leading efforts.) This team is transparent, upfront, and provides timely communication at a friendly, professional level. There had been a different vision for our deck at the beginning, then upon hitting a roadblock, Brad reached us to share the details, came up with an alternate solution, and importantly, with design aesthetic! Brad and Kalyn don’t just hit the ground running to finish a job with a quick turnaround, they’re all about quality and precision. We’re so happy with our new and greatly improved deck. Thank you, guys!
