We hired John DeGroot of All Phases Building to build our custom rambler with an estimated 6 month completion per contract. At the one year mark we paid off DeGroot and “parted ways” to finish the build ourselves. Poor communication from DeGroot throughout the build process, craftsmanship issues in each phase of the build, along with no cleaning up after each phase. DeGroot often blamed the sub-contractors and us, the homeowners, for problems and issues and threatened to quit on several occasions. We didn’t see DeGroot for the last 2+ months of the house build and he refused to do a walk through to address issues. At the end of the build, DeGroot attempted to back charge us $7,000+ for erroneous change orders and left a giant trash pile even though he was paid to remove all construction debris. DeGroot doesn’t seem to respect his position as a general contractor for a homeowner’s financial interests, nor work well through disagreements and common issues that occur on a house build. DeGroot seems out of his element and in the wrong business for the way in which he treats his “customers”.Oct 5, 2017All Phases Building's reply
We completed our part of the contract at the beginning of July and haven't been contacted about any problems with the house to date. I strongly urge you to contact me to make any corrections that may be needed and discuss what ever we can do to make you a happy customer. There must have been some misunderstanding about us refusing to do a walk through as I don't remember ever refusing anything you had asked and addressed everything you had sent us for punch list. It was the second small list of items that you had asked to complete yourself for a contract discount. As you know, the $7,000 you call fake charges was a long list of change orders you had us complete. This ranged from building an entire extra floor system, extra concrete steps and hooking up to the well equipment that you installed etc. You still haven’t paid us for all of this and I decided to let it go. This project took 11 months and yes that is a long time for a house build from my company. I’ve built commercial condo’s in that amount of time. Problem started from the beginning as we were not provided power for the first three months of the project. Power was your responsibility and building without it is extremely difficult. The second major obstacle was when you dug up the 1200 foot long driveway impeding our access for deliveries and labor. We were forced to park approximately 800 feet from the house and haul in generators plus lumber deliveries that had to be hand carried through the woods. The framers and other subs had repeatedly put the job off because of this. The Third major obstacle was the weather last winter. We had an extreme amount of rain while fighting the access and in some places 24” of mud that you created. Then after you had repaired the road, it began to snow. We had over 12” of snow on the ground and on the 9/12 pitch roof which made it impossible to install the roofing. You refused to install drainage and we ended up with 12” of water under the house that I had to pump out. The list goes on. I was shocked to see your negative review since I thought we had really great almost daily communications that were almost always positive in nature. Please contact us to try and rectify any issues you may have come across. Your photos: The messy job site photo was taken during roof framing phase and sheeting scraps are thrown down to the ground as is typical. This is not how the job site looked when we were done. The out of place 2x4 photo was also taken during framing phase and you know any and all framing fixes were taken care of before inspection and drywall. (we passed our inspection of course). Your subfloor photo just shows a wet subfloor that has swelled from the rain. This is typical and was not separating. The swelling went away once the roofing was installed as it always does. You installed your own flooring on top of it without problems. Debris pile photo shows mostly the trash that you threw on it. All the paint buckets and garbage bags were supplied by you and placed there. You know we had nowhere to store debris except in that spot. There was no access for a dumpster on your property. We picked up the majority of it and you asked to complete the remainder for a discount. If there is a problem with an interior door, please let us know and we will come right out and fix it. We haven’t been notified of any problems and it would be a pretty easy fix. The fake review pic was not a fake review. I provided a house drawing for this customer and she copied the wrong photo from our website is all. It was just a mistake. We are trying to get it removed although we don’t even use that thumbtack account. I’m sure all of this is just a misunderstanding and I would like to sit down with you and go over all of this in hopes of finding a way to make you satisfied with the project.
This has been the best experience I have had with a contractor in over 20 years of having done various projects. One, always on time, came when they said they would. No surprises in pricing or any overages. Cleanup—could not really tell work was happening in that they cleaned as they went. Quality is last but not least. Room looks fantastic. Extremely easy to work with and would highly recommend for any project.Nov 14, 2018Verified
We hired All Phases to frame and install a new garage door. The door looks fantastic. John's crew got it done quickly and it looks exactly how we envisioned it. They were timely with their responses to our questions and the scheduling. It was a pleasure dealing with them and not having a nightmare that some contractors can be.Apr 29, 2017VerifiedAll Phases Building's reply
Thanks for the great review Anita and thanks for referrals.
Our project was a renovation. We had carpeting replaced by laminate, all baseboards and window trim replaced with updated white, doors, walls and ceiling repainted and a fireplace wall rebuilt. Our kitchen was updated with new cabinets, quartz countertops, and backsplashes. John was always available for questions, gave us great suggestions, was punctual, and stayed within our budget. He met timelines and sent us to vendors that had quality and varied products. It was a pleasure to work with John and his crew!Apr 6, 2019Verified
The repairs were almost completely done the first day. John is a trustworthy, skilled worker. Very easy to work with, honest and professional. I highly recommend him for any repairs or remodels that you need. I will most definitely work with him again in the future.Oct 25, 2017
