A truly professional and hard working crew! Larry and his people handled a large and difficult wallpaper removal project for me. The job was done with great attention to detail, and with excellent care to protect my floors, windows, and cabinetry. Everyone was pleasant to work with and followed through on all aspects of the job as requested. They made great suggestions and I felt that they had my best interests at heart. I absolutely recommend them.

Jorge did a wonderful job removing the wallpaper from our home. He was both reliable and trustworthy as he had to do much of the work while we were at work ourselves. He started and finished on time and cleaned up nicely before he left. I would definitely use him again.

Ernesto spent to long days working repainting of our two bathrooms. He also removed and repainted several doors. The work was professionally done, on time as promised, and the work areas were cleaned up upon completions. I would recommend him for handyman type work. Tony B.

Byron and his team did a fantastic job repainting our whole house interior. He fixed up a lot of poorly textured and damaged sections of the wall, replaced some baseboards and possibly the hardest job of all, he refinished our ceilings which had difficult to remove texture and big cracks in the plaster. Although some of the damaged plaster still shows through the paint in places, Byron spent a lot of time ensuring that it's as concealed as possible. He is very communicative, pays a lot of attention to detail and proposed solutions to our concerns. Would hire again for sure!

We had a very good experience with the Reed Painting Company. We needed the interior of our mid-century lathe and plaster house painted, and we needed it done within 2 weeks. It took a few days for us to initially meet, but that is to be expected when you call and want to meet immediately. Randy came by with a portfolio of work the company had done for other clients. He was well-prepared and had additional certification (lead paint removal) that was nice (although there wasn't much removal in our job). He measured the rooms, took note of the various and numerous holes and cracks in our old house, and gave us a bid within 24 hours. He also included a colorist, Sheila, in the deal. Her help was crucial. Randy sent the bid by email, which was nice, as it was quite long. It covered about everything. The crew came in on Monday and was finished by Friday. That's kitchen, living room, dining room, 2 bedrooms, bathroom, entry and hallway. Also kitchen cabinets and doors! They used a lock box so we didn't have to be there to let them in. They started the project when we asked them to, finished on time, and even accommodated us beyond the contract: they removed window coverings, they allowed chimney repair contractors to share the space for an hour, and they met with us on a Sunday for the 'walk through'. Our only complaint was that they rolled on the paint on the kitchen cabinets, instead of using brushes. Maybe that should have been discussed....I assumed they would brush those, so I can't fault them entirely. We would use them again, and may do that soon for the exterior painting.

Scott came to my home to remove an old over the stove hood vent and light assembly; which included the removal of it, the cleaning of the duct that vents through the roof, and then the installation of the brand new hood. He did a great job. He was on time and thorough and as an addition while on the roof, he threw in some time to clean out the gutters while inspecting the roof itself. I already have in mind a few more jobs for him. His rates are competitive plus he's a very nice guy.

Anastas removed a large mirror from above our fireplace mantle. Amazingly, he took down the mirror in one piece, cleaned black glue from the bricks that were behind the mirror, cleaned up around the fireplace, and took the mirror with him. He knew what he was doing. Friendly and pleasant to talk to. I'd hire him again for sure. Thanks, Anastas!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

  • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
  • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
  • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
  • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
  • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
  • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
  • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
  • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
