Hired on Thumbtack

Short story - DO NOT HIRE this contractor!! He provides shoddy workmanship, is unreliable and does not have the skills, knowledge or tools to provide the services he advertises. Long story for those interested in reading - We hired Richard Heinlein (dba All American Landscaping and concrete) to perform sod removal and installation for us via a bid we requested on Thumbtack.com on 5/14/14. Richard responded to our bid request within a day with a quote of $400 for the labor and dump truck to dispose of the sod, and asked that we provide the sod. Richard came to our home within a few days to see the site and take some measurements. We talked about the job details, and how we wanted to have a shed removed and disposed of as well. We agreed to empty out the shed over the weekend so that he could begin work the following Monday. He was very vague whenever he was asked about price or details. His typical answer was “let’s just do the and we’ll figure it out (the price) later.” Richard and my husband spoke on Friday May 16th and agreed that Richard would start the following Monday and would get us a quote for the shed demolition over the weekend. Husband and Richard agreed that we would order 4 pallets of sod from the nursery to be delivered early in the morning of Tuesday, May 20th. Richard and one other person arrived on Monday, May 19th and took down the shed in addition to tearing up the existing yard with a sod cutter. His helper took all of the scrap metal from the shed as well as other scrap metal from various items, because he could recycle it and get money for it. They never did dispose of the wooden floors or wooden workbenches or shelving that the shed was constructed with. (It was left sitting in our yard.) Upon removing the shed, we discovered that it had been built on a concrete slab unbeknownst to us. Richard and I had a conversation about what to do with the slab. He proposed two options. 1) leave the concrete and install the sod on top of it < sidenote - WTF?? I am not a landscaper and even I know that is ridiculous>, or 2) break up the concrete and dispose of it. He cautioned me that, if sod were installed on top of the concrete pad, that area of sod would become a different color than the rest of the sod. > The fact that he suggested installing sod on top of a concrete pad should have been a red flag and we should have cut ties with him at that point. I told him that I would speak with my husband but that I could pretty much guarantee that we were going to want the concrete removed. He refused to take my word for it, insisting that I talk to my husband about it and let him know our decision. As we later learned, he really preferred to only speak with or deal with my husband, yet he repeatedly called my cell phone number having lost my husband’s and would begin conversations with the likes of “I really wanted to reach your husband…” We (my husband) arranged for Sod to be delivered at 7 the following day, Tuesday May 20th per Richard’s estimation on timeline and installation. I informed Richard of the confirmed delivery date and time in person, as I was home while he was working. Richard left for the day (leaving his dump truck in our driveway overnight) and agreed to be back the following morning before 7 am when the sod was to be delivered. The sod was delivered on Tuesday the 20th and Richard spent the day breaking up the concrete with a rented jackhammer. (Um… he works in concrete and does not OWN a jackhammer.) On the morning of Wednesday, May 21st, Richard left me a voicemail letting me know that he was unable to get the Bobcat that he had rented for the day. He had planned on using the Bobcat to remove the existing sod and level the ground that day, but instead he informed us that the work would need to wait until the following day. He assured us repeatedly both in person and in voicemail, that the “sod would be fine”. He kept telling us it would be fine up to a week. We NOW know that sod must be laid out within 24-48 hours of delivery. When left to sit on the pallets, the heat generated from decomposition will kill the sod, not to mention it is a living thing and the roots need immediate contact with soil in order to take root and survive. Thursday, May 22nd, Richard and a worker arrive at 10 am with a bobcat, and proceeded to remove our existing grass and move the existing dirt around. No sod was laid down on this day, and we had then exceeded the 48 hour window for successful sod installation. Regardless, Richard continued to assure us that the sod would be fine. On Friday, May 23rd, it got to be 10:30 am and I had not seen nor heard from Richard. It was raining outside and our yard was becoming a giant mud pit – not the ideal situation when you have two large dogs with access to the yard via a dog door. Soon after, I received a call from Richard telling me that he was not going to work that day because it was raining, and he does not want to get sick. If offering to lay sod on top of concrete were not red flag enough, having a landscaper unwilling to work in the rain in Seattle should have been the final straw. Still, we continued to give him the benefit of the doubt and he continued to tell us that the sod would be fine. It had now been 72 + hours since the sod had been sitting there on pallets in our driveway. Richard must have sensed the anger, bewilderment and frustration in my voice on our phone call, because about an hour later he called back to tell me that he was, in fact, going to come do some work that day but that he was having trouble finding anybody else to come work with him. He arrived and began putting down the first of the sod around 2:00 pm on Friday the 23rd. He got a small strip of sod laid that day. I left the house, and by the time my husband got home from work, Richard was gone. Richard continued to work on his own with no helper through the weekend putting down more sod on Saturday and Sunday and Monday, May 24th, 25th and 26th. By this point, there is still sod on the pallets that has been there for six days, well beyond the recommended maximum of two days. The sod that he is putting down is not lush and green as you would expect with new sod. It is brown, muddy and moldy. It looks like shit. He tries to “power wash” some of the mud out of it after he lays it down. He tamps the living shit out of it with a tamper by hand as he places each piece. Richard keeps telling us that the sod will be OK and that the grass will bounce back. My husband later recalled Richard saying something like “Grass is a WEED. It’ll come back.” A weed? Really? After several days of telling us this as he continues to lay out dead sod, he seems to come to the realization that it will not survive. There are still several bare spots that need sod, but what is left on the pallets is clearly dead and unusable. On Tuesday, May 27th, Richard tells us that he will get some sod at his expense from the nursery but he can’t get it until Friday. He tells us that he will be over on Friday as soon as the nursery opens and he can get the sod. On the morning of Friday, May 30th he calls to tell me that he is too tired to come over that day, and tells me that he will get the sod and come over to install it the following morning, Saturday the 31st. Richard arrives on Saturday with 10 rolls of sod. He puts these down to cover a few bare spots, then leaves a note on our gate (we were both home, yet rather than tell us in person he left us a note) – telling us that he came up short and he would be back the following week with 20 more rolls of sod. The following day, Sunday June 1st we have a professional landscaper come over to bid on some separate work and to give us an opinion of the state of our lawn. This is when we learn that sod should be laid down no more than 48 hours after delivery, and that the ground must be rototilled, top soil added, and fertilizer added in preparation for new sod. All of these things were confirmed independently in subsequent phone calls to Sky Nursery and JB Lawn, where the sod came from. Richard did none of these things. We called Richard to tell him we are cutting ties and we need to discuss repayment. He was not willing to discuss at the time, telling us that he had a lot of things on his mind and he needed a few days. He promised to get back to us with a phone call by end of day on Tuesday June 3rd. He did not. Wednesday, June 4th – ~ 9:00 am - I filed the small claim with the city of Shoreline. Wednesday, June 4th – 6:30 pm - Richard calls my cell. Tells me he wanted to talk to my husband but didn't have his number. He acts really urgent. He REEAAAALLLY needs to talk to my husband. I tell him I'm about to put our baby in the bath and my husband is not home yet. Ask him to call my number back in one hour. He calls back and leaves a message 2 hours later at 8:30 asking us to call him back, or if not tonight, first thing in the morning (did not request a specific time). Of course we are busy putting kids to bed and miss his call. We return his call at 10:00 pm. He sounds drunk. He tells us he is half asleep and he needs us to call him in the morning. I ask what time, and that I am not sure we can accommodate that with our work schedules and getting out the door with 2 kids in the morning. He does not tell me a specific time, only that he has to wake up at 4 am and he goes to bed at 8 pm. Then he says he will call me tomorrow. I ask him what time, He does not answer with a time, just says again that he will call my phone number tomorrow. We ask again, what time he will call because we need to plan. I tell him we have the patience for ONE more conversation to get this resolved. He says that we just need to get this straightened out "between the three of us". . We say "We are both right here, right now" - and ask him "bottom line, are you going to repay us the $, or do we need

DO NOT HIRE THIS CONTRACTOR! He came out to my home (late I might add), laid a concrete patio that looks ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE, stole our OUR level, promised to come out today to fix the job and bring back the level, didn't call and didn't show up, claimed to have left a message (no message), says his truck broke down and will return Friday (when I asked where his truck was he couldn't tell me), July 4th and top it off he blames the lousy job on what he refers to as his "Mexican" help. I will now have to push off the delivery of my swim spa due to this scamming, cash only thief!!! If there were a zero star option, he would receive it!!!
