About
I provide drum and percussion lessons at my home studio for students of all ages and abilities. I teach all styles - everything from jazz to rock, funk, soul, R&B, Latin, Brazilian, New Orleans, African, reggae, hip-hop, etc.
A little about me:
I am the drummer and percussionist for Juno award-winning, Canadian band, The Paperboys, regularly touring in Europe, also in Canada and the US.
I make my home in the historical Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, where I teach drummers of all ages. A proud endorser of Protection Racket Drum Cases, I also perform with various other bands including Polyrhythmics, Cordaviva, Si Limon, Locarno, Maracuja, Eduardo Mendonca, Brazil Novo, Eli Rosenblatt and Friends, Adriana Giordano, and in musical theatre productions.
My passion lies in performing, creating, teaching, and experiencing music of all styles. My greatest influences have been attending concerts, traveling, and listening to records during college.
Growing up in Southern California, I began studying private drum lessons at age 8 and proceeded through high school. In 2003, I changed location to the Pacific Northwest to attend University of Puget Sound where I performed in underground jazz, percussion ensemble, some small jazz combos, and an energetic funk band.
At Puget Sound, I majored in International Business, minored in Spanish, and studied jazz history and world music. Throughout college, I studied Latin percussion for Afro-Cuban and Salsa music. Similarly, I became enthralled by Brazilian music and have journeyed to Brazil two times to study and experience their captivating music. A substantial portion of my record collection is made up of records purchased in Brazil.
Needless to say, I love music and I am confident I can provide inspiration while helping you attain your goals, whether you want to become a professional gigging musician, or just learn to play your favorite songs.

I am adult drum student and have taken over a year's worth of lessons with Sam. He was extremely easy to work with, to schedule sessions was a breeze as he is fast to answer email and his studio is large and pleasant.
I'd recommend him not only for kids and novice adult students, but also for more experienced drummers looking to improve their hand technique, their musical feel (especially in jazz and latin), and their dynamics and finesse.

I took percussion lessons from Sam. I appreciated his desire to teach what I wanted to learn - and especially his ability to keep up as that changed from lesson to lesson! Experimenting with a raft of different percussion instruments and styles was key to my deciding which ones I wanted to focus on and which ones I didn't enjoy at all. I also appreciated his ability to debug what was going wrong with my technique and to brainstorm drills that not only improved my playing but that I also enjoyed. Without a doubt Sam gets my highest recommendation if you're looking to learn percussion!

I have to preface by saying my daughter and I have been through 2 other teachers. We found Sam. He's professional. His studio is clean and set up for two drummers, he and the student. His patience and talent in teaching is top notch. Quality and fun homework right from the get go! Both of us were playing more than just the "standard" rock beat after the first lesson. I know he offers more then rock drumming but that is our interest at this time. Perhaps Latin American rhythms soon!

Sam is very patient with my 7 year old son who is just starting drums. Sam does a great job providing instruction while making it safe and fun! My son has already made a lot of progress and is really enjoying it!

My son is brand new to percussion and he has so loved being taught by Sam -- and I am amazed by how much I love listening to the 2 of them play. He is obviously a talented percussionist (check out the Paperboys!) but he is a patient, kind and appropriately challenging teacher as well. As a busy parent, I also appreciate his reliability as well as his punctuality. And the several times I've had scheduling conflicts he does his best to accommodate us. We both look forward to my son's weekly lessons - I had no idea how much fun percussion could be!
