A friend recommended Ray Phelan to me ten years ago - thank god! I cannot recommend him high enough. I've never even met him in person - I live on the East Coast. However, he has made it easy with secure electronic transfer, mail, etc. - whatever was best for me at the time. I often credit Ray with the reason I was able to purchase my house - his guidance and double checking my own number crunching was invaluable. He's helped me do the same through two refinances, including one that was quite ugly. Ray was living out of the country at the time and he offered to have a Skype call with me to help me figure out what to do - he was up literally in the middle of the night to help me. Whenever I get a change in pay, I immediately send a pay stub to Ray and he tells me if/how to change my withholdings for tax purposes. He has often contacted me out of the blue throughout the year (not just tax time) to let me know about new tax laws that may have implications for me, to ask how I'm doing with whatever personal business transaction he knows I'm working on (or should be working on!), and to let me know about changes in tax law that I could benefit from if I just did a few things. I have referred several friends to Ray after hounding them for years to use him. I think they thought I was trying to sell them a bill of goods. When they finally decided to use him, they came back to me with a resounding, "why didn't I listen to you sooner!?" With Ray, you're getting a truly beneficial personal relationship, not just some guy who does your taxes. Quick and dirty: Responsive - I've always heard back from Ray within 24 hours - usually sooner despite the time difference. Competent - When Ray reviewed my previous three years' tax returns, he recouped a few thousand dollars for me - and those returns had been "professionally" prepared by someone else too. Reasonably Priced - You're gonna spend $80 on Turbo Tax anyway - have Ray do your taxes instead. Friendly - Ray has a great sense of humor and will immediately put you at ease. He'll answer any questions you have and he has the patience of a saint.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I started out doing my own taxes when I was 16 and pretty soon was doing everyone in my family and then the neighborhood! I've kept it as a second job for my entire professional career, and then grew my business into my primary profession.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure they have some formal training or certification in the field. You currently don't have to actually know anything about taxes to open a business in many states. The IRS recently tried to implement a requirement for testing and licensing of tax preparers and this was frozen in court by people who don't want to be tested. You don't want someone doing your taxes who only knows how to open TurboTax!
