Ben did a great job – better than the original installation. He came back a couple times to install drywall behind the vanity, sand it, and paint it. I am thrilled with his work.

Gilbert's Painting did an excellent job! He was very thorough and efficient. We not only had painting that needed to be done, but also some drywall repair and he did both at an extremely reasonable price. He came back the day after he was finished just to make sure we were completely satisfied, which is very rare these day. I would recommend Gilbert to anyone.

Painting and Beyond did an excellent job of painting our house and will recommend them to anyone. Not only did they put up with us with three color changes until we where satisfied but re-nailed many boards. They power washed the entire house and did caulking where needed. The price was also reasonable.

We hired Steamatic for some drywall repair and painting as well as carpet cleaning. Alex and his team did a great job on the drywall and painting. They were able to match the texture that was already there and we were very pleased with the finished look. We were also very happy with the carpet cleaning.

Trent and Jacob are amazing!! They do great work for a great value. I ended up having them do more than I expected. They are all around great handymen/carpenters. They pretty much did it all from tile on the kitchen floor to drywall to a new door frame and a roof! Love these guys. I am having them come back to do the rest of my house when I am ready. Highly recommend!

After 8 quotes for a fence from local fence companies and contractors, I came across thumbtack and figured I would give it a try. Almost immediately entering my info Joe reached out. I was immediately impressed with his professionalism and timely quote. He actually included the exact material quote showing exactly what materials along with how much everything cost. He was the clear winner. I was pretty specific with the timeframe, and he got it done. He stayed on budget as promised, and was great with communication throughout the project. Joe completed a 90+ foot privacy fence with a beautiful gate that crosses my driveway. I recommend Joe Mahas and Native Remodels without hesitation.

Jorge has so many talents, I ended up using him for most of a major house rehab. This was the sixth house I've rehabbed and it was great to have one contractor knowledgeable about so many things so I didn't have to wait on each specialty. Jorge drywalled, laid a wood laminate floor, put up baseboard, put in 2 toilets, ran plumbing and put in a new dishwasher, put up baseboard, ran a water line to the refrigerator, put in a new kitchen sink and countertop, leveled a wobbly ceiling fan, hung closet doors, as well as other things. He was there when he said he would be, worked until the job was done, and was pleasant to work with. I highly recommend him and will use him again.

Michael came by and gave a free itemized estimate on several areas of my home, which allowed me to do the work as time and budget would allow. The estimates were very reasonable. We scheduled an appointment to first start on my powder room. He repaired drywall, painted, installed a toilet paper holder, towel ring and hung a mirror. He showed up on time and days after would call if he was running a few minutes late. We had broken our towel bar which left a hole in the wall. My husband had done a very poor patch job. Michael made it look like a hole had never existed. Michael suggested we go with a towel ring instead of a towel bar which was more appropriate for the size of the room. Great suggestion. He also removed a large mirror that had been glued to the wall. He carefully and neatly removed the mirror and immediately used his own vacuum to clean the little debris that remained. He then miraculously repaired the drywall. Prior to painting, he removed the exhaust cover and vacuumed the dust from the exhaust, removed the medicine cabinet and taped off the appropriate areas. He pays close attention to detail and is very neat. He made sure I had cleaned the exhaust cover and medicine cabinet before replacing them. A day or two later he painted the walls and ceiling. I was very indecisive about the paint color and chose a different finish than what Michael had recommended, which caused us to lose a day. Michael was very patient and did not charge me an additional fee. I should have listened to his expertise because his original recommendation was the right choice. The previous toilet paper holder had been drilled through tile on the wall. The new holder had different measurements and mounting system. He took his time and thought of a way to configure the new one so that it fit without ruining the existing tile. He also screwed in the new bronze outlet covers I purchased. One of the screws that came with the cover was too long. Michael took the screw from the original one and used a finishing marker to cover the head so that it matched the bronze. It this small attention to detail that impressed me. Michael took pride in everything he did, both large and small. He is very clean, detail oriented, educates you about the process and will exceed your expectations. I highly recommend Michael. You will not be disappointed.

Working with Steve was an amazing, POSITIVE contrast to previous contractors we've had in the house. We gave him a "test drive," by asking him to install a couple of windows. When we experienced his workmanship and dependability, we then contracted him to patch up the drywall and install the kitchen cabinets we had already ordered from another company. Dependable: Steve came when he said he would---or called when he was running late. He also went above and beyond what was "required" of him to do his job. We didn't have a car big enough to bring one of our windows home, so Steve picked it up for us, and brought it home! Quality of workmanship: His work was outstanding. Steve paid attention to big AND small details (leveling each of the cabinet doors!); carefully followed--or improved upon--the cabinet plans; touched up the paint that was scuffed when cabinets were installed; and cleaned up after himself every day. With the drywall, he took the time to go over it two or three times, until the new part was seamless with the old. With the window trim, he made a custom stain that beautifully coordinates the window trim to the cabinets, and gave me extra for our future use. Knowledgeable: He knows the code, and chooses to go beyond the minimum. He moved one of our windows, and told us the minimum header was eight inches. He chose to put in an ten inch header. When the rough work was done by the other contractors (plumber and electrician), he pointed out a couple of things that weren't up to code, and said we should be sure these details were done before the rough inspection. He helped me save thousands of dollars by walking me through how to be my own general contractor---at no cost to us. From time to time, Steve would even call me to see how things were progressing, and let me know the "next step," to keep things moving. He pointed out ways he could have saved me money on the cabinets, if I had ordered through him. We're hoping to do an addition on the house in a couple of years. When we do, we'll be calling this guy again. Thanks, Steve, for your outstanding workmanship! I LOVE our kitchen! :)

I needed a large electrical project done. I just bought a rental house and needed the electrical updated. They outdid themselves. The project was ran by Cameron. And when I say they are brilliant at what they do. They brought out 5 electricians and rewired my whole house. I already passed my rough-in inspection and im waiting for my drywallers to finish for them to install the fixtures. The best part, it cost $15,000 plus materials... and that's including demotilition. Imagine. A 4 bedroom house, bathroom, dining room, kitchen, family room, spare room in the basement and an additional breaker panel. WOW!!! Everyone else was quoting me between 18,000 and 25,000!!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
