I have always regretted giving up playing guitar when I was a teenager. When my teenage son started playing bass in his schools jazz band I was motivated to see if I could play again. I struggling for months attempting to use the internet and learn on my own before meeting Ken Fought while he was playing at a friends wedding. I was so impressed with his artistry with the guitar that I scheduled lessons for both my son and I. Ken has helped rekindle my passion for music and continues to work with me in improving my skill and confidence in playing my guitar.

My organization has hired Guy and his colleagues in multiple different musical/band arrangements. Each time it was easy to book, the fee was reasonable, everyone arrived on time and the music was amazing. The talent that was hired was phenomenal and we would be thrilled to have Guy and his colleagues back with us at any time.

I got such amazing feedback from my guests as well. Here are a few I got multiple times: • This was the most fun I ever had at a wedding!!! • When you said you were having a live band, I was picturing a few guys and guitars. This was so much better! • We are just blown away. Haven’t had this much fun dancing in years! My whole goal for my reception was to make a memorable experience for all of our family and friends to feel like they were really apart of the celebration of our marriage. I wanted a fun party were everyone stayed late and danced all night. Like any bride, I wanted to be able to look back on my big day and feel like it was the most amazing day of my life. And it was. Jerry was absolute amazing to work with and really understood my vision for the wedding and helped my fiancé and I get exactly the reception we dreamed of. I loved the variety of music he could provide us with, depending upon our personal tastes and the atmosphere we wanted. I am so glad we went with Mood Swings, it made our big day a day I will be dreaming of for the rest of my life.

My husband & I had the band Jerry & Nora with the Revue play at our 80th Birthday party. The members of the band radiated good times. They played a variety of tunes, very good. It was just fun, fun & more fun. They are one of the best bands around. We go to see them every chance we get.

My family has hired Sipos & Young for a wedding reception and a celebration of life gathering. Rachel and Chris are fantastic musicians and their song catalogue is deep. They also asked on both occasions if there were any particular songs the family wanted to hear. They set the tone perfectly for each event as diverse as they were and really added something special.

The B-Side Band performed at our fundraising in November. They were outstanding!. I would highly recommend them for your next event. From securing our date to discussing the details of the evening, the members of the band were extremely helpful in guiding us. Our guests enjoyed their playlist and couldn't get off the dance floor.

We couldn't be more pleased with Command Performance. They are a first class group. Their vocalists are a perfect compliment to the big band sound. We will definitely use them next year at the WW-2 Reenactment. My only complaint is that the 3 hours they played went too quickly.

Lloyd Stephens and his band are an absolutely amazing group of artists. Their sound is so much fun to dance along with, yet it remains beautiful and cheerful. Lloyd's voice had every one of my guests wanting more. The bands funky beats kept the crowd tight on the dance floor. The whole band drove an hour and a half from Milwaukee, WI to Franklin Park, IL to perform. They were punctual, polite, and friendly. We had a lot going on with other artists performing but the band kept their patience through a 6 hour hire time plus a two hour set up. We hired the Lloyd Stephens Band to perform at our wedding and could not have been happier. Truly Awesome and One of a Kind. Thank You So Much Lloyd!!!!

About

Johnsburg Jimmy Murphy comes from a long line of musical talent, starting from his younger days watching his father Walter play upright bass in a succesful Jazz trio.He was hooked right from the start and began fumbling along at the age of 12.From there he moved over to guitar and made room for his younger brother Lenny to pick up the bass and follow in their dad's footsteps. That was the start of a 17 year run on the streets of Chicago, playing every club they could get their hands on .The stage named Johnsburg was added to Jimmy Murphy due to the large volume of Jimmy's on the circuit by his peers.Johnsburg is the small town from which he currently hails and has always supported.Current projects such as "Johnsburg Jimmy and Freinds: allows for a fresh set of musicians on each run of events and keeps things intersting for his followers. He continues to push the envelope and is on a constant mission to keep the family music alive.Since his brother Lenny's passing in March of 2013 he devotes all of his passion through him and for his memory.See you on the road.....Jimmy

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
