Surfaces to be painted
Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I have built a career painting murals nationwide in public buildings, museums, zoos, aquariums and residences. Clients include the Mount Vernon Estate Museum and the Smithsonian. My work is defined by a high degree of realism on a large scale. Often, landscape is the defining feature, with wildlife detail and/or human figures taking part in a historical event. My style is adaptable to particular venues and the needs of the client.

In 2007, the City of Laguna Hills issued a national Request for Qualifications for the Council Chambers murals project. The City received over 50 responses. Three finalists were asked to submit two acrylic sketches for review by the City's Public Art Committee. The Committee was overwhelmingly impressed by the sketches submitted by Rob Evans. As a result, the City commissioned Mr. Evans to paint three large murals depicting the history of the area. I highly recommend Rob Evans and hope to have him create other works of art in Laguna Hills.

To Whom It Might Concern, RE: Rob Evans It is my pleasure to recommend for your consideration Mr. Rob Evans. I am lucky to have worked with Rob on several projects in the capacity of design-consultant for various exhibit design firms in Boston, and as prime principal designer at ATA (Antonino Treu, Architect). Rob’s work and professionalism have always exceeded the client’s expectations (and my own) for its quality and minute sense of detail. I can attest to viewing a museum visitor tearing up at the opening of the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum in Pittsburgh, PA when seeing for the first time the 20 foot X 50 foot mural (digitally enlarged) of the Forbes Field painting that Rob created for the space. I hope you will enjoy working with Rob as much as I have. Antonino Treu, 9.24.18

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I have a large price range per square foot, between $25 and $100, with most jobs falling in the middle. Price depends on complexity and detail required. Lots of sky, for instance, would bring the price down. Higher-end residential commissions, including landscapes (possibly with framing trompe l’oiel elements) fall near the top of this range. Small jobs are not subject to the square-foot metric: they’re priced individually by estimated time & skill required.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

If the customer is willing to proceed, I set up a payment schedule based on percentage of completion, starting with an upfront amount to cover research and design, a process leading to a scale-version of the mural approved by the customer, so they know exactly what will be going on the wall. I like to separate the budget into (a) design and (b)execution/installation, with the former representing at least 30% of the budget. Design is the most important part of the process, enabling faster and more efficient full-scale execution.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Early training in realistic painting was supplemented by valuable lessons learned learned as a scenic artist for two different companies in Boston, MA during the 80s, which gave me confidence to work on a very large scale, creating backdrops for theatre, film and video. I began putting these lessons to work immediately in a career that has spanned over 30 years.
