Chef Brett, Kathy and his more than excellent staff catered the grand opening of Tara Vis Gallery, my new photographic adventure in Charleston, SC! The one thing that stands out the most to me, besides the great food, fun and fellowship, was the fact that I didn't have to worry about a thing...the confidence in knowing that Chef Brett and Kathy had my back took so much pressure off of me...so, in short, in wasn't so much what was produced, (although spectacular!), but what Chef Brett, Kathy Downey, Ted, Hydie and staff put into it...your hearts and passion for perfection! In this day and age, finding those that expect, no demand, the best from those surrounding them in a work environment is no easy task. Chef Brett's passion for excellence is beyond compare because he demands the same from himself each and every time his talents are required...this benefits every client served! Truly, the best in Charleston!!

Brett Mckee and Kathy Downey prepared a private dinner for Jen and I to celebrate her birthday and our anniversary. The food was tremendous and the way you walked us through the making of each of the five courses and why it was combined with a certain wine was truly a great learning experience for us. The hospitality showed us was incredible and truly personalized the experience for us. But while the food was awesome the thing we remember the most from the experience was the time spent just talking as friends. Brett and Kathy are two of the most generous and giving people you will ever meet. It was a night and experience that we will remember for a long time. Not sure how we are going to top that next year! God bless you, our friends!! 😊🙏🏾 Chuck and Jen Mack

I first met Chef Brett when I was working at a magazine in Charleston, South Carolina. As part of a feature, I lined up an interview with Brett to pick his brain about must-have kitchen items. If you’ve ever met Brett, it should come as no surprise that he immediately won me over with his bold presence and undeniable charm. Fast forward to a few years later, my best friend since childhood was getting married. When I was planning her bachelorette dinner, I knew I wanted to treat her to Chef Brett’s amazing culinary creations. I reached out, and he graciously helped me secure a space on the second floor of his then-restaurant Oak Steakhouse. As if helping me with the space wasn’t enough, Brett went above and beyond to make the experience unforgettable. He came to our table several times throughout the evening, making jokes with everyone and personally taking our orders. When my best friend, the bride-to-be, couldn’t decide between steak and ahi tuna, he said he’d make them both for her. When several of the other ladies agreed that sounded wonderful, he offered to whip up custom surf-and-turf platters for anyone who was interested. My best friend felt like she’d won the lottery! Plus, if we’re really being honest, I earned serious rock-star-level street cred with my friends for hosting the evening. That was the first time I’d ever tasted Brett’s grilled calamari (or any grilled calamari for that matter… and can I just say, “Yum!”) as well as his mother’s special recipe cheesecake. To this day, the entire night remains one of my most treasured foodie memories. In the time since, I’ve reached out to Brett occasionally for quotes for various publications. He never hesitates, even offering me some of his own recipes for my blog. I’ve “watched” him devote countless hours of himself to charitable causes because, well, that’s just who he is. The man’s got big talent – that is undoubtedly true – but the best part is his heart is even bigger. I’d happily recommend him to anyone, anytime. And, for the record, I still have sweet dreams about that cheesecake!

In the summer of 2010 I was scrolling through Facebook very late at night and saw a post by Chef Brett, he said someone asked if he would give in home cooking classes and he wanted to know if anyone was interested. Well, I jumped right on that because I knew how good his food was. It took a few weeks to work out the logistics but finally on 09/29/2010 Chef Brett and his assistant, I think it was Scott, came to my house to give me, my mom and 3 of our friends a cooking class. He showed us some techniques and then had us use them to help fix the food. We had scallops, beef and Bananas Foster, the food was awesome, just like we knew it would be. This was a special night for my mom and it couldn't have gone any better. I will always be able to say that my house was his first in home class, that is awesome to me!

4 years ago you prepared a fantastic dinner for my family and friends at my daughter Leslie's house. It goes without saying that the dinner was fantastic, and paired with great wines, but the memories you made for our family, especially my granddaughters Madison and Morgan, when you included them in the preparation and letting them help serve was an experience they still remember. Then, last year my girlfriend and I attended one of your cooking classes/dinner. It was a fun evening and we loved your new digs McKee's at 139b. Your rooftop space is beautiful and has a great view of the city. I would highly recommend an evening with you, privately, or at McKee's at 139b for a fantastic dinner and a fun night. You and Kathy have a great thing going, keep it up!!
