- How did you get started doing this type of work?
By being an architect I was often visiting jobsites to make sure that the plans reflected the reality of the job. I discovered that I liked the contracting world much better than being in the office sitting at the computer the entire day.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I was hired by a couple who wanted to sell their condominium asap, but the kitchen and the master bathroom were never remodeled. They wanted to be able to sell quickly and get better offers by remodeling before placing the property on the market. After we obtained the permits (in three weeks), we completed the construction process with custom cabinetry in two weeks finishing ahead of time and under budget.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Make sure your contractors are licensed and insured. They should offer you a detailed written estimate, backed up by a contract. As a customer you have to protect yourself from people acting as contractors.
