- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
If the student is a beginner, my goal is to make sure that no bad habits are developed. Right from the start we begin with proper posture and proper right and left hand placement. We start by learning some basics: proper fret hand finger placement, holding the pick properly, tuning the guitar, exercises for building finger strength, exercises for building left and right hand coordination, etc. It is important that the student learn the basics of music but at the same time, I keep it interesting by introducing well known songs that are fun and easy to play. I gradually introduce more challenging material as the student's overall skill continues to develop. If the student already has some experience playing, my approach will be completely different. We begin by determining what the overall goal will be and then I determine what's necessary to reach those goals. Here are a few things that experienced students have asked me to help them with: learn more chords, improve sight reading, learn music theory, learn to apply scales and arpeggios, know how to learn songs quickly and efficiently, learn to keep time, prepare for an audition, improve technique, learn subdivision, work with a metronome and the list goes on and on. There are many factors to consider and I would give a thorough evaluation, so that we can take the proper course of action that will achieve the desired result.
