Hired on Thumbtack

The original conversation that we had we discussed a fence to keep in two small dogs. I was looking for a fencing company, so I was not looking to have to tell them how to install a fence to keep dogs contained and safe. I relied on the fact that as a fencing company would understand what and how that needed to be done. I know now that I made an incorrect assumption that you have the knowledge to install a fence that is safe for dogs. Here are the issues that we saw: 1. The original discussion we had I indicated that the fence needed to be secured to the ground that you could not just run the fence over top of the ground and think that that was secure. I discussed that I have a dachshund and a Jack Russel beagle mix. I let you know that these are digging breeds and I was concerned about them going under the fence. 2. During the installation process the wooden gate was removed by your boys. When this gate was put back on it was not put on as it was originally secured. The new placement of the gate has allowed too much space between the ground and the bottom of the fence which allows my dachshund to get out easily. I want to re-state the placement of the gate is not as it was originally. 3. While wrapping of the fence is acceptable it was by no means a quality job. The existing “dog” fence that had been installed, and was removed, was put up with better quality by an individual that was not associated to a fencing company. 4. During installation, one of the boys was trying to use a claw hammer to hammer the garden stakes into the ground. This revealed how little they know about putting up fence. 5. One of the boys was hurt while working and remained to get this job done. As he thought his arm was broken because of being hit by his partner with a sledge hammer while he was holding a garden stake. This makes me very uncomfortable with the quality of training they have had for putting up a fence. 6. Fence elevated off of the ground by the septic system - we spoke on the phone on the date the job was done using one of the boy’s phones. I was able to see between 5-6 inches between the ground and the fence bottom. As I was telling you this one of the boys went and worked on that area and got it down to 2-3 inches. An improvement, but not a fix. 7. I have had rabbits passing under the fence and when my dogs see them they run after them. When the rabbit went under the wire up near the barn, my dogs both got busy and would have dug their way out if I hadn’t been there to stop it. Now they are out only when supervised. 8. Thumbtack communication Sunday June 24 – you indicated that you would stake the fence to the ground approximately every foot. Thumbtack communication Monday June 25 – you indicated that you walked the premises and put in staples where needed and ancored some of the area by the sand mound. The comment you made about my gate being higher off the ground then the fence was inappropriate as you now know the gate placement was due to your boys putting the gate back on incorrectly. 9. Based on your Thumbtack communications – I am disappointed that you did not announce yourself when you arrived. I did tell you that my husband is home all of the time due to a stroke. He was ready to communicate to you about my concerns but did not know you were here. That again is another sign that you and your company are far outside of your capabilities; 10. I walked the fence and see that you in fact did not stake the fence to the ground every foot and the “staking” you did do was with left over wire that was shaped into a ‘comma’ and used to secure it to the ground. 11. The individual that originally put the gate up has been asked to come back to put the gate up correctly. The stakes that you claim were used are only approximately 7 inches long and are so thin that they can be bent by hand. These are not long or thick enough to be considered to be a stake. We expected about 3/8 inch rebar to be used to secure the fence to the ground and that the stakes were done as originally indicated about every foot. 12. I have not used Thumbtack previously, and now will never use them again as they obviously are not choosing quality businesses.
