Hired on Thumbtack

They came out on a Monday to check the job, we agreed to price and a start day of Thursday 9:30am. They were the highest bid and I paid a bit more than the original bid. I picked them because they bid a price rather than an hourly rate and looked to have more experience than some of the other bidders. They checked the materials I had and said the paint I had wasn't enough and they didn't want me to wait until it ran out to get more, even though the store is 5 min away. They called on Wednesday to say they ran over on another job and would arrive at 1pm Thursday and how late could they work that night. They moved the vanity into the room without removing the door causing scrapes on the door that they filled with caulk. They painted the room, installed the vanity, changed a light, mirror and bathroom hardware. It all looked okay except where they had to cut wood. The shelf in the vanity, the back of the vanity cabinet and the baseboard were cut with a sawsall that left very rough and uneven edges. Where they cut the baseboard to fit the vanity you could see unpainted banged up wall behind the vanity leg. I asked them to at least put the top piece of the baseboard there to cover it, which they did also with a rough cut. I asked if they would come back tomorrow to clean up those cuts and was told no, they had too much work tomorrow. They finished about 7:30pm. I spent a couple of hours cleaning paint off of floors, hand prints off the walls and dust from everywhere. I also had to touch up cuts and dings on the floors and vanity with a wood touch up pen. The next day in the light I noticed several areas that the original paint color was showing through. Since I still had some of my original paint and a whole gallon of new paint that wasn't going to be too much of a problem. Then I got a call that they had lost the check I gave them. It took 30 minutes on hold with my bank to get the check stopped and they came by on Saturday to pick up a new check minus the stop payment fees. I showed him the paint holidays and rough cuts and when he looked under the sink he said, "that's not right." He arranged to come back on Tuesday to fix the remaining problems. After he left I looked under the sink and saw that the drain line for the air conditioner wasn't attached to the plumbing, it was just emptying into the cabinet. I put in something to catch the water. On Tuesday they fixed the plumbing and paint touch ups. Said they didn't have the tools to fix the bad woodwork the way I wanted them to so they wouldn't be doing anything to fix that. I think sandpaper to knock off the rough parts would have gone a long way to making it look better, but I put the trash can in front of it. So I bought paint I didn't need, spent hours cleaning up after them, had several days of emptying water buckets from under the sink and spent time learning how stop payments don't always work. The room looks okay but I will eventually need to get someone in to redo the bad woodwork. To their credit, they were very pleasant, always called to let me know when they would be coming and came back to deal with the problems.

First, they were an hour late. I sent detailed pictures and we discussed the work over the phone. They said they would come over to look at the work that needed to be done, go get materials, and come back to complete the project - all same day. After arriving at our house, they then told me that they would not be able to complete the project that day (Sunday) and would need to come back one evening the next week to complete it. I called and texted probably 10 times to follow up and see what day they would be coming over to do the work, and they never responded or got back to me. If they were not up to the job or just didn't want it for some reason, they could have had the decency to tell me so I could have moved on to look for someone else right away. The worst part is that they picked at the wood and took our "temporary repair" apart, and never came back to fix it, so now it actually looks worse than before. I was also days out from having a baby and since I wasted time following up with them, we didn't have time to complete the project before baby came. Safe yourself a ton of frustration and time and go with someone else.

Handyman arrived in a timely fashion and finished the job quickly with high quality. They also caulked which wasn't in the original request but didn't charge extra. I plan to use them again when needed.
