I’m Thien Nguyen and I believe “It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.” ― Theodore Roosevelt Henry Ford once said “Genius is seldom recognized for what it is: a great capacity for hard work.” Our society is prominently about successful people such as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates because these people make fortune for themselves and create jobs for the community at large, using their talents and abilities. I admire them because they work hard to expand their talents. Being a Vietnamese immigrant, education is greatly endorsed and is the reason why my parents had made many sacrifices to get me here to the “land of opportunities,” a place where anyone can achieve their dream if they put their mind to it. Thus, throughout my academic career I put all my efforts into school. However, putting your mind to it is not always the only requirement when you have learning disabilities. I have been struggling since the start of college due to my slow ability in learning, but with endurance and patience, I finally achieved success in the end. Throughout my high school years, I was an average student with a passion for mathematics. Once I entered De Anza College, trouble arose as I enrolled in Pre-Calculus. I put in a lot of effort for this class but ended up with a depressing grade on my first exam. I sought out my professor for help and she simply told me that I was not ready for the class. Her message got to me and I eventually failed the class. However, that did not bring me down because I took this class for the second time and I passed. After a while, I caught up with the math concepts and I promised myself to work even harder with the whole series of Calculus. However, I was stumbling with the last class of the Calculus series. Even though I spent all my time and effort in this class, I still did not grasp the concept and I withdrew from the class. The second time around, I thought that if I work harder, I would accomplish my goal but I failed miserably again with a D. As I took the class for the THIRD time I became despondent and lost my confidence. I thought, if I fail again I would be kicked out of college and my college career would come to an end. However, I passed the class with a B on the third try and that boosted up my self-esteem. In September 2005, I enrolled at CSU East Bay University. I worked diligently on every math class that I took. Although I had struggled with many math classes before, I found a new way to figure out problems by studying with friends. From my friends, I was able to understand more than from lectures in class. I knew that I had a slow ability in learning but I wasn’t afraid to ask my friends for help. During my time at CSU East Bay University, I enjoyed studying math more than ever. I found some math subjects that interested me. One of the favorite subjects was hyperbolic geometry which was completely different from Euclidean geometry that I had learned in high school. Other math subjects that I took interest in were ordinary differential equation, number theory, numerical analysis, and many others. Failure is not the result of one’s limited knowledge because knowledge takes time to expand and grow. I realized that each brain develops at different pace and learning takes time. My mentor, a math professor at CSU East Bay University, once admitted to the class that during his academic career he got a D in a math class. This appalled me because he is a professor. Though he took the class again and he passed with a good grade. His message was that everyone has a different pace of learning. Whereas some people have quick abilities to understand, others may take a while to grasp things. It does not mean that that a person is not intelligent; it is just the matter of time for a person to fully develop their knowledge and understanding. As I reflect back from the early days in community college until now, I realize that I had a slow ability in learning, but along the way I developed my thinking process. During my last year at CSU East Bay University, I taught several remedial math courses and saw myself through my students. I could connect with many of my students’ struggles with math for I knew exactly what they were going through. My own struggles were reflected in their struggles so I took my time with them. Each student in any learning institution has a different learning pace and capability. I have experienced that patience is an appropriate tool to use with students of any backgrounds in the learning process. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Applied Mathematics. In May 2011, I went back to De Anza College and got a part time job as a math instructor. The dean assigned some math courses for me to teach and one of the courses was a Pre-Calculus class that I failed miserably. I thought to myself what a surprise it was that I became a master in the subject that I had once failed! I thought, what marvelous thing we all can do if we get back up every time we fall and try again. Amazing and surprising things can happen! Two years later, I decided to head towards a new direction and opened a live math tutoring sessions via the web. When I was struggling with math during my college years, I always wished I had a personal tutor who can answer any questions I had at any time. Who knew that that can be quite possible within the last few years. With the technology we have today, I can reach out to more students at their convenience and at their hour of need. I am ecstatic to help them instantly and more efficiently. Math can be intimidating to many students and some believe that they show their weakness when they ask for help in class. As I teach students online, I help them to become more confident in math so they can regain their confidence in class and assurance in life. I believe that any student can overcome math like I did, if he/she have a mentor that leads him/her in the right direction. Happy Learning.

Math wasn't my strongest subject, so I had him help me in my math classes. I've been with him since 7th grade and I've improved a lot. Now, he helps me with my calculus work. It would be very difficult to do calculus without my tutor.
