What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
If you think you'd like to work with us, we’ll set up a time to chat on the phone or via Skype. We’ll discuss your space, vision and ideas, and gather technical details such as location, size of the wall or room, surface preparation and time frame. Usually, we can provide an estimate after the initial phone call, but when possible, we’ll prefer to set up a site visit to discuss the project in person.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been painting contemporary wall murals for over 10 years. After studying studio art at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts, I moved into the interior design profession. I assisted designers across the Mid-Atlantic, painting interior wall murals and decorative finishes as their clients' needs arose. After moving to Connecticut, I continued painting murals on the side until I founded Mural Envy in 2015.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
Mural prices are determined by wall area, level of detail, and travel distance. While each mural is quoted on an individual basis, the average cost is $18 per square foot of painted wall area.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I've always loved the prospect of transforming a blank wall into something extraordinary. I painted my first wall murals in high school, one for the school hallway and one for a friend's bedroom.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Most of my clients are families with young kids. People get really creative with their children's rooms and will consider designs for those spaces that they wouldn't necessarily think of for other spaces in the home. However, once they see the transformation of the kids' room walls, they start thinking of other ways to incorporate a modern wall mural into the home decor.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
In the summer of 2015, I painted the master bedroom in a home where I had painted the daughter's room a few years previously. The couple's vision for the master bedroom was "seaside retreat." Because their tastes leaned toward contemporary art, I was able to get really creative with abstract design. I presented the idea of gray, blue and white rectangles inspired by the way sunlight glints off waves, and they loved the idea! Once the design was finalized, it only took two days to paint. The completed mural is one of my favorites.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
If you are considering a hand-painted wall mural for your home, you want to choose an artist whose style is similar to your own aesthetic. Try to flesh out your ideas ahead of time and gather photos of rooms you like so that the artist can get a good idea of your vision. As with all contractors, you'll be happier with the overall project if the artist is organized, timely, professional and easy to work with.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
A muralist's job is to bring life to your vision. Before you set up the initial contact, spend some time collecting examples of rooms you love so that the artist has a solid foundation on which to design your custom wall mural.
