Paul replaced three fence posts for me and rehung the gate. He was on time and ready to work at the time he set. He showed great understanding of what the job would take to complete and the know how on how to do it. The old gate was never really do right, so Paul made the necessary modification to make it work. I have made an appointment with Paul to come back and work on redoing my bathroom. AND he does great work, for a great price, best I could find in Anchorage.

Original project was just some electrical work. Ended up hiring Jason to do the whole project - new vanity and cabinets for the bathroom plus drawer/cabinet pulls, sink and faucet, new fan, all new switches, paint (he threw that in for free), hand towel bar, and of course the original job of moving two switches and an outlet. Finished project far exceeded my vision for my bathroom - definitely hiring again for the rest of my renovation projects, large and small. Thanks for a fantastic job!

Specialty contracting did a professional job on my whole home project including flooring, finish work, molding, and wood accent work. They had the experience to know how the job needed to be done and did it right, without supervision.

Chad was prompt, tidy and professional. We are very happy with the work he did in our home. Replacing a fiberglass tub and shower surround that had cracked up due to improper installation by our home builder/contractor took 2 days. The demo went smoothly and the new unit fit in great. The sheetrock and texture repair job looks fine. We were glad to have Chad's help!

About 23 years ago, my wife and I bought a house in Anchorage that was built in 1951. Little had been done as far as renovations; it was drafty, and energy inefficient, to say the least. In the intervening years, we have done extensive renovations and now the house has a 5 star energy rating. However, as the house got tighter, issues with indoor air quality became more apparent. Of particular concern was excess condensation on the windows during the winter. Each morning, beginning in October, started with me gathering up the towels on the window sills, (some sopping wet from condensation), and putting them through the dryer. A couple of years ago, we installed, at great cost, an HRV heat exchange ventilation system hoping to alleviate the problem. But the system did little to lessen the problem and caused its own ancillary problems that caused us to turn it off altogether. Last fall, I was resigned to another 6 months of dealing with excessive moisture on window sills, and dealing with mold growing on walls and woodwork, but my wife suggested I call Healthy Homes Alaska and see what they had to offer. Pete explained the system and though I was skeptical it would totally eliminate the problem, I was desperate to try anything. It has been 6 months since the system was installed, it has been through an Alaskan winter, and the system has wildly exceeded my expectations. There is now little or no condensation on the windows, nor is there any of the mold present that was eating away at the sheetrock and woodwork. Also, the air quality in this old house is much improved. I would recommend the EZ breathe Ventilation System (and Pete Klebes) to anyone wanting a healthier living environment.

I hired Troy to replace the caulking in the bathtub, replace the entry-door frame, buff out scratches from dogs around the entry way (inside and outside), repair the molding around the window in the entry way, replace a garage door opener, and fix the faucet and drain in the bathtub. He was very thorough to complete these projects with a guarantee that when the weather permits, he will finish the touch-up painting on the outside. Troy seems very knowledgeable and willing to meet budgeting needs for his customers.

We have had Rick do multiple major projects for us including a full kitchen remodel, re-doing our wood floors, 2 bathroom remodels and our energy upgrade work. I would HIGHLY recommend Rick. He does excellent work and is professional, reasonable and reliable. He ALWAYS left the work site cleaned up at night and worked very speedy. He was able to give us really valuable advice and insight on the projects as well. Our house looks beautiful thanks to Rick! We have referred him to numerous friends.

Doren took on my bathroom flooring job. Work always takes longer then anticipated and this job was just that. Replacing the flooring turned into tearing out & installing a new sub floor, Doren identified & fixed several plumbing issues that we're wrong & showed me why & how to correct them . He also fixed the toilet and installed fans with lights throughout all the three bedrooms. With all these other issues he still finished the job timeframe on time! Doren is professional, quick to respond, timely, thorough in his trades, and cares about the finished product & the client. Highly recommend, I will be utilizing him directly on other projects!

We couldn't be happier with the results! Kevin is professional and detail oriented, a real craftsman. This guy is great to work with, he listened to our needs and rebuilt our rotten deck beyond our expectations. We've had others do work in the past and have usually felt a little disappointed with the results (framers masquerading as finish carpenters). NorthEdge Construction blew us away and I have recommended them to my neighbors and family.

Austin called me within minutes of submitting my request. He came out to evaluate what I wanted done quickly and started my project the next week! Austin and his Crew were friendly, helpful and did an incredible job! They made sure everything was done as I wanted, did not destroy my house in the process and were very reasonably priced! I'm already planning more work on three other rooms in my house and will be using Murphy Construction and Remodeling!

    Rocker Company

I would recommend Steve and the Rocker company for all of your construction needs. Our new home is in a really nice neighborhood here in Anchorage, but the interior hadn't been updated much since the 70s. Steve helped me make design choices that rocketed our home into this millennia, century, decade, and year, but also without doing anything that will feel super dated in a few years. He went out of his way to help us stay within budget but get top quality materials where it mattered. We used them for a kitchen gut and remodel, creation of an additional laundry space, laying flooring, removal of a baseboard heater, new wall and the installation of a window and door. So our job tested their skills in pretty much every trade: electrical, plumbing, demo, new construction, insulation, windows/doors, drywall, texture, painting, flooring, lighting, etc. The only thing they didn't do was install our stone countertops. Steve and his crew were efficient, clean, polite, and SO SO good. If you're nervous about hiring someone off the internet, (I was!) you don't have to worry about it if you go with The Rocker Company. They are honest, skilled, hard workers. They don't cut ANY corners, but they do maximize efficiency so you aren't paying for "dead" time. They are clean and courteous, and I never felt at all uncomfortable with them in my home, whether I was there or not. Good help is hard to find in Anchorage. You can't go wrong if you hire Steve and the Rocker Company.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

        What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

        • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
        • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
        • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
        • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
