Vincente has completed multiple projects for us. He installed four large windows. He insulted our garage door and installed lights in the garage. He installed flooring in a condo that we own and also replaced kitchen lighting fixtures. He repaired the lock mechanism on the condo door. He repaired our lawn mower. He leveled our three tier deck and repaired the stairs.

I had a deck in Anchorage that needed repair. Initially we thought it would take 2 days to replace the deck boards , but complications with the framework required another day. Fred did a fine job in the time he had available. He is knowledgeable in construction, showed up to work on time and is easy to work with.

We had an tricky issue with our deck flooring. The surface also serves as the roof of our WIC for the master bedroom so we wanted something weatherproof and waterproof but the construction of the deck only left about 1/4 of clearance below the doors opening onto it. Jason was fantastic! Jason provided a free consult, really listened to our ideas and wishes and worked out a wonderful solution with us. He provided a itemized bid and stuck with the price he quoted us. He was friendly, accommodating, and most importantly did a thorough and EXCELLENT job! We will happily recommend JTNA and use them again!

Skip did a series of tiny-to-small projects around the house. He replaced our front porch stairs, hung a porch swing, raised a threshold, installed a couple ceilings, lowered a peninsula cabinet, replaced an exterior door, installed a glass shower enclosure, etc. He did everything fabulously. He took on the subcontracting of some other work, too, and acted as the general contractor. His standard of quality was the same as ours. We are thrilled with everything he did. He was prompt and industrious in getting the work done. We would definitely use him again and have recommended him to others for similar work.

Josh built an amazing custom deck/pergola for us and kept the costs inline with his original quote. He also built a beautiful cedar fence with custom gates. Extremely easy to work with, professional crew and excellent final product. We highly recommend-

I have hired Chad to do many projects for me. The most recent was cleaning my gutters. The biggest one was rebuilding my back deck. His work is excellent and he fully guarantees it. He is professional, punctual, polite, and always follows through on all the jobs he has done for me. He delivered and installed a washing machine, put together furniture, installed shelving, repaired the concrete floor of my garage and cut back shrubbery. I highly recommend him.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
