Nabeel H. says, "We hired Pascual and team to complete several projects to include a coffered ceiling installation in the family room and a lighted recessed tray ceiling installation in our kitchen. Both projects required extensive carpentry, drywall work, lighting, and painting, in addition to the utmost precision w/ planning and measurements to achieve a symmetrical aesthetic in an older house. I interviewed/reviewed multiple contractors to get an idea of pricing and timeline in addition to the quality of work provided. We were initially impressed with the reviews and quality of work seen in the PLF portfolio online so I decided to reach out. Now I have been around the home improvement/contracting world for quite some time and expect companies with a portfolio and presentation (website, professionalism, marketing material, experience, etc.) of the caliber of PLF to cost an arm-and-a-leg and therefore rarely if ever actually use one of these types of companies because of the cost differential. I always go with the cheaper contractors and opt to essentially endlessly manage them to get a near desired result, I assumed PLF would therefore be a no-go based on price but for whatever reason still decided to reach out. Well, I am glad that I did! Not only did PLF come in and quote the project competitively with the type of rates that my usual go-to type of contractors quote, they were able to meet a strict and tight deadline that those other contractors couldn’t. It was very evident to me that Pascual’s team was more experienced with this type of work as they were estimating a third-of-the-time others were to complete the exact job. This was a no-brainer and we gave PLF the work. I am glad we did and that is an understatement! This was a much different experience from what I was used to as I didn’t have to endlessly manage them, I didn’t have to have them repeat work, I didn’t come down to find that they had randomly made an “executive decision” to a problem that changed the design or look in a way that almost always in the past had been the exact opposite of what we would have wanted. Now this doesn’t mean problems didn’t arise, there were several things such as pipes that couldn’t be re-routed, an off-center fireplace, un-level walls, etc. that did come up but I was made aware of them and given professional suggestions on work-arounds that not only made sense, they essentially worked out to keep the overall aesthetic the exact same or even better in the case of the kitchen work! PLF not only delivered a result that exceeded our expectations, they did so in a manner and for a price that I have yet to see in other contractors over the years in my area. We are so happy with their workmanship that we are actually getting quotes to enhance some of the older projects that we had hired others to do. We have finally found a contractor that we can depend on and hope to use for the many other projects on our to do list in our efforts to completely modernize our house. Nabeel Haider"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does adding a porch increase home value?

A porch may increase your home’s value and boost its curb appeal. However, you’ll need to do your research to understand what types of home upgrades can attract potential buyers.

How much is a porch?

It costs about $5,000-$10,000 to build a small, basic porch, according to HGTV. Prefabricated porches typically cost around $10,000-$30,000. Larger, custom-made porches can cost as much as $50,000.

To find out exactly how much your porch will cost, request a cost estimate from a porch builder near you.

Does a porch need foundations?

Yes, your porch should have a foundation that adheres to your local building codes. You can often find this information online. You can also consult your porch builder and ask for their help when navigating building codes.

What is a sleeping porch?

A sleeping porch is a screened balcony or deck that contains sleep furnishings and cool breezes. If you live in a region that experiences warm weather at night, these porches can provide a way to escape the heat and get a good night’s sleep.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. How do I find a contractor to build a deck?

First, conduct an online search so you can see a list of the best deck contractors in your area. This makes it easy to compare the top-rated pros, and you can quickly view their ratings.

Next, click on several contractors’ profiles so you can read their customer reviews and view photos of decks the pros have completed. When reading the reviews, look for information that highlights the contractors’ quality of work, their ability to build the deck on time and their pricing methods. As you’re looking at the before-and-after photos of completed decks, pay attention to the craftsmanship, materials and style so you can get a sense of the contractors’ skills and experience.

After identifying several deck contractors who seem capable of building your deck, look into their credentials. Confirm the requirements in your state and city, and try to verify the pros’ licenses online. Or, you can ask the contractors to provide you with an overview of their credentials.

Your last step: start asking for free estimates from several contractors. Give them as many details about your project as possible so the pros can give you an accurate estimate. What type of material do you want for your deck? How big will it be? Where should it be built — your front yard or backyard? When do you need it built?

Make your final decision after comparing quotes and analyzing the research you’ve conducted. Ultimately, you should pick a contractor who has experience building your desired deck, the necessary qualifications, mostly positive reviews and fair pricing.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
