All Aspects Painting and Home Repair came and gave me a thorough and extremely accurate estimate. They kept me informed on the times that they would show up and were always on time. I was impressed with the respect that was displayed toward my property. The crew didn't leave behind any trash and were very professional every step of the way. The only thing that impressed me more was the quality of the work they performed. They removed the popcorn from the ceiling and patched numerous areas that had previously been improperly patched. Although the popcorn removal was messy they tried every step of the way to reduce the amount of noise and mess that I was exposed to. They painted all of my trim and doors as well as the walls also. Most impressive to me about the work was that they were very concerned about coming back out after the carpet installers to ensure that their paint job looked good. They really care about the quality of their work. Another characteristic that stuck out was that All Aspects Painting and Home Repair took the time to answer my many questions. A naturally curious person I had many questions and not once did I get a canned response. The time they took to explain answers really allowed their passion for their work to show through. I have shown off their work to everyone I know. The professionalism and the passion displayed for their work would have me enthusiastically recommend these gentleman to anyone.

My house was in no shape to sell. There were outside issues with the lawn and look of the home. Glass and trash were in the bushes and the lawn had not been touched in over 6 months. Throughout the home there were too many issues to name here. A few of the major things were water leaks, missing/damaged ceiling tiles in the basement, the electric garage door was damaged and missing glass, just about every room needed to be repainted, stains in the ceiling needed to be taken care of, and a toilet in the master bathroom needed to be replaced. All other contractors were quoting around $5,000 and Gregg from Sunbuilding quoted around $3,500 without seeing any of the competing quotes. The work was impeccable and the service was second to none. I live states away from the house and before I could even think to check on the status of the work he was sending me pictures and updates. This helped greatly with my peace of mind that the house was in the proper hands. I would not hesitate to recommend Gregg and Sunbuilding to anyone in need of any work performed on their home...except carpets...I don't think they replace carpets.

Josh Meggs came our the same day that I posted a need and gave me an estimate. He came back the next afternoon and performed the repair. He returned when he said he was going to and fixed the sprinkler line without removing any concrete in the driveway. I was very satisfied with his work.

Mark and his crew did what they said what they would do and did it when they said they would do it. They also stuck by their estimate and did good work. I would highly recommend them and wouldn't hesitate to call them to do a third job for me! They installed my insulation, metal roof, siding and floor. I could not be more thrilled with how it all turned out. Very good communication throughout the entire process and they answered any questions or concerns I had immediately and effectively. Can't go wrong with these guys.

Repaired limestone around the front windows. We had new windows put in the house and whenever the man who installed the windows told me that the stones around my windows were loose, I has to have someone make the repairs. James came out and looked at the stonework and gave me an estimate and came the next day and made the repairs. Very good job and very nice people.

I'm the daughter of a home builder and I know quality construction. David McCormick and his crew were professional from beginning to end. Each item in the estimate was thoroughly discussed. He arrived at our meetings with ideas that were innovative but not expensive. He was frugal with an eye on quality. His team arrived on time (bright and early) and stayed late to finish up and leave the job in a good place. They put down drop cloths to protect our existing flooring. They were friendly and David was always present. We discussed all changes in advance and we had zero surprises. I would use them for other projects. I would highly recommend David and his crew to others.

Omar was incredibly pleasant to work with. I needed quite a few dead limbs removed from over my house and he gave me the best price of anyone I had contacted. Not only was he Doing the work within two days of agreeing to the estimate, but he also cut, edged and cleaned my entire yard as a kind gesture. I would hire him again in a heart beat.

The cabinets and all the electrical and plumbing was well done. Everything was quality and Jeff went above and beyond to make things right.

Called Sunrise for an estimate on a new roof. They beat everyones prices and were very knowledgeable and helpful.Very glad we chose this company. The roofing crew did a fantastic job. We even had to have a gable added to our roof and they brought a construction crew in to take care of that. A+ from start to finish. I highly recommend Tony Pintaro and would not hesitate to use him in the future.

I went on Thumbtack two evenings ago to find someone to demo and repair our exterior porch awning. It had been improperly installed by previous owner and had sustained water damage. C & L was the first to get back with me. They promptly scheduled a free estimate. When they came out, they seemed knowledgeable about their work and were able to text me two optional estimates in 20 minutes. They quickly scheduled a repair date for the following day. I met them at the store to purchase materials needed. They completed the job very quickly and very professionally. I was very impressed with their work from all of their team members. They took time to work on the details. After their work, they left a clean yard and porch. I literally didn’t have to do anything except meet them to purchase materials. I ran errands the rest of the day and came home to a beautiful front porch. I will reach out to them directly first for my next home project. I highly recommend them!

Greg and his crew repaired glazing and painted exterior windows on our house. The good: he was quick to respond with estimate and showed up on time. The quality of work was good as well. The not-so-good: I had to call him back out to finish part of the job he missed. Also he didn't clean up after the project. With that being said, I would use him again as he was on time and I was overall pleased with the work

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
