K L says, "Honestly, I wasnt expecting my experience with Nathan at Heavenly Gardens to go so smoothly. I reached out to them about a broken irrigation pipe that had busted underground. I previously had two handymen come out to repair it, but it kept leaking. Frustrated, I ended up shutting off the entire system, and it sat dormant for six months until I recently decided to try again at another attempt.I called to schedule a date, and he arrived right on time. Even though it was raining and the ground was completely saturated and muddy, he still made the effort to get the job done. He started by isolating each zone of the house to make sure there werent any other leaks. Not only did he fix the original issue, but he also discovered a major leak on the opposite side of the house that I didnt even know about, which explained the low pressure we noticed during testing. One of the pipes had cracked over time due to tree roots, and he quickly repaired that along with what he originally came to fix. He was extremely knowledgeable about landscaping irrigation and even pointed out a few things I thought I understood but actually didnt, showing me what was correct and incorrect with the sprinkler coverage.I highly recommend Heavenly Gardens. Their pricing was very affordable for the amount of work and dedication involved. I even offered to have him come back on another day when it wasnt raining, but he insisted on finishing the job. If that isnt customer service, I dont know what is. He didnt just meet my expectations, he exceeded them by staying until everything was fixed, including issues I didnt even realize needed attention."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

The national average cost to install sod is around $2,235 and prices typically range from $1,311-$3,808*, according to Thumbtack data. The type of sod you choose, your lawn size, and many other factors can impact how much you'll pay for sodding services.
