McMillan and Sons were everything I had hoped for in a roofer and much more! * Responded quickly to my initial inquiry * Provided a free estimate within 24-hours * Price-matched a previous quote * Communicated well throughout process * Showed up at scheduled time * Did an excellent job * Used eco-friendly, non-toxic materials * Promised to stand by work performed with a 2-year guarantee * HONEST!!! A previous estimate indicated additional extensive repair work; yet, McMillan and Sons convinced me I didn't need that area addressed and convinced me NOT to pay for unnecessary work. They easily could have taken my money; yet, they did not! They saved me $. This may sound like a small thing, but I think it showed a great deal of integrity . . . something that is seriously missing nowadays. Roofing is a lot like auto repair; unless the customer is extremely knowledgable about the trade in question, they are at the mercy of the person(s) doing the repair. I feel confident that the work performed on my roof was exactly what was needed . . . nothing more . . . nothing less. And for that I am grateful!!!! I hired McMillan and Sons for two jobs, and might even have them paint my house next year. I give them two thumbs up and my highest recommendation. Thank you, McMillan and Sons, and thank you Thumbtack, inc. for connecting me with such an excellent roofing contractor!!!

Had concrete poured for a side yard driveway. Alex was awesome! Came the next day for a quote. He was very reasonably priced so we booked the job and he was out the very next day, on time and working right away! He and his crew were accommodating and friendly. Some of the neighbors even hired him to do their concrete as well! I will defiantly have him back for other projects we will be doing, and recommend him as well!

I had my driveway and patio concrete stained by Eric and it looks amazing! He was very professional and efficient. He showed up on time and the concrete looked better than I had expected. My patio had areas of discoloration due to mesquite trees and he assured me that the stain would still look good in those areas and he was right! I'm so happy with the finished project! Eric was wonderful and I would definitely recommend him!

My concrete sidewalk had a 14 s.f. block that was raised-up from the tree roots below. The block wasn't cracked, but it posed a tripping hazard. In searching for a solution, I came across Thumbtack and was connected to Ken's Masonry. I live in Goodyear, and he came from Chandler to do the job. A lesser mason might've removed the block and poured a new one. Ken saved the block, stabilized the foundation, and it's now level with the rest of the sidewalk. His repair was the best! A new block would've worked, but there's no way it would've matched. Ken did amazing work, and I'd hire him again in an instant.

Andre was great! The project wasn't an easy task but he was up to the challenge. He was very professional to work with, and is a man of his word. The project of replacing the brackets that secure the porch posts to the concrete, sounds a lot easier than the actual work. Andre came out within hours of reaching out to him, and my project was completed by the end of the business day. We will for certain use Andre again and recommend him as the professional he is.

We have contracted Jeff Castillo for several projects on our San Tan Valley property. Jeff completely landscaped our backyard, put in an automatic irrigation system, installed pavers and a block wall around our swimming pool and poured a concrete driveway extension leading to our backyard. All were completed in a timely manner at a reasonable cost and of the highest quality. I would trust Jeff with any project on my home and highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality work.

Jonathan was the 3rd and best quote I received on removing about 5 yards of concrete debris from a pool Reno...he stayed in close communication from start to finish and did the job quickly along with picking up some additional debris in the space. He had the equipment and that was a big plus! I am anxious to use him for some other projects involving actual concrete work.

Mr. Foster and his company were hired by my wife to “put a little stone” on our plain front sidewalk. By the time the HomeScape folks were done with the project we had a new beautifully curved stone sidewalk, really a small front patio, where I sit every morning an take business calls. Ed designed this elegant solution providing a wide curved sidewalk and a small 8 inch retaining wall clear down our driveway. The urbane elegance of Ed’s worked thrilled both me and my wife. Ed is the only one that I will have work on my future stone projects. Thank you Ed!

WOW WOW WOW!!! Rob and his team made our HG Tv vision come to life. We bought a 1974 home with a sunk in living room and a refrigerator that had been moved from the kitchen into the laundry room. After initially meeting with Rob and discussing lots of our ideas, we realized that if we wanted to truly modernize our home, we needed to fill in that sunk in living room. Rob and his crew worked diligently with the concrete pouring company to make sure everything was level and perfect. Then we decided to throw the crew another curveball by asking them to relocate the fridge back into the kitchen. They came up with a great idea and paid meticulous detail to framing the fridge, moving the electrical, drywalling, retexturing and running a water line so that we would utilize the ice and water function of the fridge. It looks awesome! They also opened a wall for us to create more of an open space and removed some popcorn ceiling. They installed our new wood look plank porcelain tiles with no/ very small grout lines and laid them to look like as if it were real wood. It is so GORGEOUS. They topped it off by installing 6" baseboards and beautiful door frames that Rob helped us pick out that gave it even more of a Wow factor. Their pricing was outstanding and even though we threw them a curveball, they still finished on time of the original timeline! We completely trust Rob and the crew of JEQ and even gave them keys to our home during the renovation. Rob is honest, reliable, in budget, flexible, communicates great about details and really puts his heart and pride into his final product. He's truly someone that you want as your contractor. We definitely recommend Rob and the crew of JEQ and will use them in the future without hesitation. Definitely call them if you're looking to get work done!

I hired Bryce to fix a water drainage problem I was having with my driveway and a retaining wall that needed repaired as the City of Phoenix garbage truck hit for the 4th in the past few years. The work is top notch and more than reasonably priced. Highly recommend Bryce and his crew to anyone. Honest, hard working, highest level of integrity and all very nice people. They want you to be happy and do everything to make sure you are. To top it of, they make sure the job site is immaculately clean. All very nice guys as well.

The skill and attention to detail that Charley took in the construction of a 2.5 car garage attached to our newly built home is very impressive. He takes pride in a job well done---from concrete to siding, to roofing. Afterwards, we wish he had been available to take part in a greater portion of our home build. He left the area spotless, unlike the other contractors who left nails, staples, trash, and boards strewn all over, It may be their work space today, but later, our grandchildren's safety was a concern. In addition, to create a quality project, Charley often fixed the poor install of others, especially if it affected the integrity of his project. He always kept us apprised of any issues and stayed on schedule. We are very pleased with his work and would recommend him as someone who still believes in quality and exceptional customer service.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
      • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
      • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
      • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
      • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
      • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

      What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
