We hired Charles to install our metal security screen door. He worked with our work schedules and communicated well. Came out and quoted me on Friday morning and came back out on Sunday to do the work. He even had to run to Home Depot to get a part and stayed with the same price he originally quoted us. He was easy to work with and installed our door in under an hour. We would hire him again!

WE originally contracted David to paint our atrium. This ballooned into painting part of the front exterior and refitting and hanging our metal gates out front. The work was exceptional, speedy and with attention to detail. Also was pleased with the flexibility. We had to change the original date set and he was amenable to this. Would recommend David. We will be using him again

I would highly recommend L & H! They came out and did a wonderful job on my backyard! It looks soooo clean now! The key broke off in my padlock on my gate and they sawed off the padlock for me. They went above and beyond for me.

A job well done. The gate now opens and closes very smoothly. My side gate latch was way out of alignment and would not close. The gate works better now than when I first had the home built in 2015. Thank you.

Mr. Blackshear gave an estimate the same day I contacted him. To tear down and replace fence column by backyard gate. The work was started the next day and completed four days later due to the holidays and rain. Needed to wait for cement to dry to paint fence.

Started off as a doggy door install (through wall), and decided to have them take care of a few other projects -- Re-cementing concrete blocks on a fence, adding missing mudcaps to overhangs, fixing driveway pavers that had 'popped' out and were causing a trip hazard, and hanging up 5 curtain rods. They went above and beyond, putting in very long hours to make sure everything got done right. They even improvised and came up with a solution when the doggy door was not long enough to protrude through the exterior wall. Really appreciate all their hard work and look forward to hiring them in the future. Thanks again.

Green be Gone did an outstanding job completely replacing a dilapidated drip system in the front yard. Michael and his partner worked for two full days in cold rainy weather to finish the job. When they got into the project, they realized there were no sleeves under our 3-car driveway for installing the drip line. This was an assumption we made when he was out to bid the project. Michael solved the problem by tying into the backyard drip system. It required them to remove a row of paver bricks from our walkway and to drill through the foundation of the block wall to connect the lines. When they put it all back together it looked terrific. Even though the scope changed, Michael was going to adhere to the original bid he gave me. My wife, who had seen how hard they had worked in the cold and the rain, insisted that he take more.

I found Arash to be extremely helpful and courteous in trying to fit my repairs/adjustments to install a wall oven as well as installing a new drop-in cooktop that required re-cutting my slab granite counter top. He had to come twice to move an electrical junction box for the wall oven since the installer did not tell us exactly where it needed to go! Very reasonable rate to re-cut my granite which required several cuts as I was going from a 30" cooktop to 36". Messy work, but he got the job done. I would hire again.

I had a wooden alley gate that was falling apart & Doug made a new one that's very solid & good looking & he did it at a very reasonable price. He also modified or remodeled an existing built-in cabinet/TV shelving unit in order to accommodate a larger TV. He matched the new wood to the old wood & it looks great! He even hooked up the new TV for me & then went above & beyond when he came back to fix it after I had a new cable box installed & the cable guy did something so that my Wii & sound bar were messed up. I'll definitely be using Doug for future projects.

We needed a gate installed in a cinderblock wall and Raphael did a great job. We thought we had the materials we needed but found out we didn’t - he helped us find the right ones and installed it all for us. I would recommend him to anyone.

Billy has been my go-to for maintenance around our new home! He has fixed: bathroom exhaust fan, installed lights, fixed my broken side gate (which fell off the hinges), cleaned the DE Pool filter and even my car door lock, that would not lock. I highly recommend him for all of your home needs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
