My son has been a student at USAMA since January 2014; and as a mom, I joined him in May 2014. Explaining why this place is so incredible will be my pleasure. First of all, it is the friendliest, most inclusive place in Phoenix. Students are more of a family than just people paying a fee to earn a belt. Second, belts are earned, not given, gifted, or bought. Students progress fairly quickly in the lower belts if they have accomplished certain goals. Higher belts only test if completely ready, and often need more time to learn what is required. This is a black belt school with high standards, but the support offered each step of the way make it attainable for students who will work for it. Progression is key. Third, you will learn so much more than just kicks, punches, and techniques. You will learn life-changing skills that are applicable every day and in every aspect of your life. Parents become better parents. Students become better students. Humans become better humans. Fourth, although it is primarily a Taekwondo school, techniques in Kravmaga, Brazilian jujitsu and other martial disciplines are taught. Kickboxing happens five times a week. The entire school changes from one of discipline, learning and friendship to one of fast music, fat-burning cardio and friendship. It is a lot of fun with great people. The school also provides monthly boot camps and excellent bully-proofing seminars for kids and their parents - both free to the community. Finally, I appreciate the diversity of age, ability, and skills taught. I love it that an 8-year-old girl does martial arts with her grandma. I love it that a 12-year-old brown belt helps his 15-year-old brother earn his orange belt. I love it that an entire family can earn black belts together. I love it that some kids come to the school unable to speak to or look at other people, and after only weeks have confidence. I love it that people coming from other schools are assessed to determine where they fit it to the school and dont have to always start over. USAMA is a truly special place with some of the best people I have ever met.
As a vivid participant at the gym, i have come to know the trainers very well over the past year and I can confidently say that my experience has more than been positive and beneficial. I am happy to be apart of the family here at the Academy. Check out Reese, he;s the guy to train with if you want to hate your life!
So far so good. I've only had a few sessions but the instructors are very concerned with making sure we get the most out of the training. Correcting what needs corrected complementing and encouraging when moves are coming together. I like the respect and organization of the classes. Overall a very good experience I would recommend to anyone. PS...You will get your sweat on.
Training under Jay Pages has helped me achieve many goals I had set for myself in a very short time. These goals were lofty to say the least, but with his help I not only lost weight and gained strength, but I was able to improve my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game so much that I've won a gold, silver, and bronze medal in my second and third tournaments ever! Jay can turn your lump of coal into a diamond! Thanks Jay!
For over 10 years I have had to opportunity to train with Soke Hausel as myself and other students from our School in Utah travels to Arizona at least 1 time per year, and Soke travels here at least 1 time per year. Wished I lived a bit closer so I/we could train more often. Soke is one of the best I have trained with, his knowledge and ability is as great or better that many of the other masters I have had the opportunity to train with in my over 30 years of training. Soke is easy to approach with questions, and is happy of explain or demonstrate to insure that everyone understands properly. He is always able to teach me something or help me improve on what I already know. Todd Stoneking, Kyoshi, Shichi-dan
Over the last few years, we have tried different sports and activities for our kids to participate in, whether it was soccer or golf, they wanted to really enjoy it, but their heads just weren't in the game. By chance, I found TNT, which compelled me to start researching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. What I found really piqued my interest, BJJ was an amazing martial art that has proven itself inside and outside the ring and coach Scott Tannenbaum learned and earned his black belt from the very best. Fast forward to the free trial class the kids attended, and I have never seen two boys so focused on their instructors as my kids were that day. We are talking kids who got distracted DURING their soccer games! I signed them up that day, and it's been nearly 6 months, and their interest has shown no retreat. They are eager for every class, and every open mat session, which is sometimes 5 days a week. In fact their enthusiasm was so great that I joined the adult class as well and now I can't get enough. We are in much better shape now than when we started and we are continually improving. There are not many exercise programs that has you working out hard 4-6 times per week and wanting more! And that's not all, my wife has also joined the Cardio Kick Boxing class as well. TNT has become a family affair that we all enjoy and the staff and students have become our second family. The kids are in the Kid Jitsu classes, but it's so much more than the traditional Jiu Jitsu class. First off, the school wont make you buy their $100 gi. In fact all classes are no gi, even the adult BJJ class. Most days the coaches cover BJJ and that is their focus but they also have MMA day on Wednesdays, where the kids get to put on gloves and practice their stand-up. Every class begins with a full warm up/ conditioning session, followed by technique instruction, followed up usually with a another related technique and practice. Finally the last part of the class is rolling/sparring where the kids can practice what they learned so far in a super safe environment. Every kid in that class looks forward to the last segment, they have so much fun. Years of traditional martial arts would not have given my boys a fraction of the real world skills they now possess, skills they can be confident of because it's not just theory, it's a hands on. The adult classes are filled with a great mix of men and women, and I have yet to run into any bad attitudes. Everyone comes in ready to learn and the coaches are always ready to teach. The format is similar to the kids class, which starts with a great warm up/conditioning session, followed by several related techniques, followed by rolling. On Wednesdays, the adults can put on their gloves and train stand up as well. Coach Scott, and the other coaches on staff including Josh, Mike, Lee, Melissa, Will, Ernie, and Duane are all super friendly and approachable and go out of their way to make sure every student is getting the most out of class, I can't say enough good things about them. My family and I love TNT, and my wife and kids love the fact that I am on the road to a better life with my type 2 diabetes in check. Exercise is the single best activity for those with type 2 diabetes, with insulin resistance dropping significantly after moderate to intense activity. Coupled with eating a healthy diet, comprised mostly of low glycemic index foods, and lots of water, I have been able to reduce some of my medications, and I'm on the path to being off of them completely and I owe it all to TNT. Come try a free trial class, chances are I'll be there watching or rolling. In fact I wish I was there now!
I have practiced qigong, dynamic yoga flow, and pranayama with Aaron. He has a balanced approach to keeping the fundamental tenets in tact while improvising the flow; challenging you to go deeper while honoring discipline and form. If you are ready to get into your body, then create space and time to make a specialized practice with Aaron's Dojo of Awesomness!
Thomas is a bad ass teacher! I came into Tai Chi knowing very little about it, all I knew is that it would move energy throughout my body. From the very first class Thomas was attentive to my "beginner needs" breaking down the movements for me allowing me to memorize one movement at a time. I also love how he incorporates the application to each of the movements, showing me how I would use them in real life situations. His skill set and knowledge base makes me feel safe about practicing and conditioning without hurting myself. I learn best this in a non- strict non-invasive setting, Thomas's way of teaching is so calm and encouraging it has helped me grow as a student and as an energy worker. I feel so grateful that I found Thomas and Tai Chi it has changed my life in so many ways! :) -Demi

At GDJJA, we will not only get you in the best shape of your life, we will also boost your self-confidence and introduce you to a wonderful group of new friends. Its not an issue how old or young you are, if your goal is to lose weight or build strength; it doesn't matter if youre male or female, or even if you want to compete or not. In shape or out of shape, all are welcome. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting, with the goal of gaining a dominant position from which to force an attacker to submit. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. BJJ can be trained for self-defense, sport competitions, and fitness. About the owner: Gustavo Dantas is a fourth-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from the world-renowned team, Nova Uniao. With over 15 years of coaching experience and being a world-class competitor with international experience, Gustavo has competed in tournaments in Brazil, United States, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates, including his most recent accomplishment, the 2012 U.S. National Jiu-Jitsu Champion at the black belt, feather weight, and senior 1 division, and the 2012 World Champion at the black belt, feather weight, and senior 1 division. A motivational speaker, certified mental and fitness coach with a bachelors degree in physical education from UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), Gustavo left Brazil in 1999 with three thousand dollars, 2 bags, and one teenage dream: to have his own 100% jiu-jitsu academy and make his living through the passion of his life, jiu-jitsu. The Gustavo Dantas Jiu-Jitsu Academy was established on March 6th, 2012, re-enforcing the statement, Believe in your dreams. Hard work pays off. Gustavo was the jiu-jitsu coach of the mixed martial arts gym, Arizona Combat Sports, for eleven years, where he achieved his 2-0 MMA record. During that time, Gustavo started the mission of promoting jiu-jitsu in the state of Arizona, becoming the vice-president of the Arizona State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and turning a small, 40-competitor, in-house tournament in 2001 to an impressive 705 competitors in 2011. This helped Arizona to be recognized as one of the jiu-jitsu power houses in the United States, where he produced over 20 world championship medalists. Well respected in the jiu-jitsu community as well as a great competitor, coach and human being, Gustavo continues to build champions on the mat and in life in Arizona, and he hopes to spread out his coaching philosophy to more jiu-jitsu practitioners for years to come. We service Phoenix and all of the East Valley (Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Scottsdale, Gilbert, and Apache Junction).
