I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Flute Performance from BYU in 2018 and 2021. I am passionate in my study of music and music history and look forward to sharing this passion with my students!
I have been teaching the flute for 9 years and have experience working with students from beginner to advanced levels. I teach from my home in Mesa, AZ, as well as online through Zoom, GoogleMeet, or Facetime.
I believe that investing in your musical education is priceless whatever your musical goals are! Whether you’re just beginning your musical journey, trying to improve your playing in band, preparing for high school competitions and college auditions, or simply interested in learning the flute just for fun, there are goals and routines that we can set to help you find success and personal fulfillment. I expect my students to be committed to the goals we set whether your goals are serious or just for fun.
Throughout the course of our flute lessons, I will focus on developing the fundamentals of flute playing: tone, technique, and musical style and interpretation. I am passionate about understanding music history as well as music theory as we work to build your personal repertoire. Part of being a disciplined musician means building good practice habits and utilizing different practice tools to make your personal practicing worth your while. Playing the flute requires physical stamina and proper body awareness so I encourage all of my students to be physically active. We work on developing healthy habits in posture and playing to avoid causing injury.

We were SO lucky to have found Jamie, who was an excellent fit for us, taking our daughter from a strong beginning level flute to a proficient intermediate level. (Our time with her was sadly short-lived due to the onset of COVID-19, otherwise by now we could be talking about an even more advanced capacity, because Jamie was brilliant at teaching all kinds of college-level aspects of flute-playing, improving our daughter's form and posture, her breathing and sound.)
As a paying parent, I loved how focused Jamie was and how completely she used the half hour we had with her. She was punctual (came to our house for lessons!!--major bonus--), got right down to business, and taught right up to the end of each session, never wasting any time. Jamie is a great communicator, is extremely competent, and most importantly, positive, patient, and kind, while expecting the best of her students. She has a professional attitude, manner, and understanding not only of flute, but of teaching. In the time since having Jamie as her teacher, our daughter has taught herself four major songs on the flute, which I see as being motivated by great learning experiences from great teachers (Jamie, and the teacher before her, who introduced our daughter to the flute initially.)
We look forward to using Jamie again in the future as our daughter progresses through school and potentially toward a music scholarship some day. (Our daughter is currently in middle school wind symphony, which is great and keeps her practicing, but I miss the impressive solo recital pieces she would be challenged to work toward improving as a student of Jamie.)

My son has been playing for 6 years. And his playing has leaped to a new level in a very short time. In the first couple months of flute lessons I could tell there was a big improvement in his technique. Before it seemed like he could play the notes really well. But now it seems like he has a greater understanding of how he wants to interpret them and give them expression in a variety of ways. I don’t understand all the technical stuff but what I see is he is really enjoying playing more and it sounds wonderful. Thanks Jamie for your expertise in teaching flute!

My daughter took flute lessons from Jamie for several years and we were so impressed with her musical progress and growth during that time. Jamie was attentive and kind with my daughter, but she also pushed her and always challenged her to reach beyond where she was currently. Jamie is a wonderful teacher and musician and I am so grateful to her for all she did for my daughter.
