We found Mr. Benzrioual on Thumbtack as we were unhappy with our previous CPA/tax accountant. He came to our house, making it easier for us, and had talked with us ahead of time, telling us what we needed to collect prior to his he emailed us a handy checklist of items (we'd need) for our reference. He was very accommodating and allowed us more time to prepare and adjusted his visit date accordingly. Mr. B. Is very Professional, knowledgeable and cordial throughout. He completed our taxes in a timely manner, and we are delighted with the refund results! We recommend Mr. Benzrioual very highly, and will definitely seek his services again next tax year. We have found our new "tax man"!

I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable when it comes to finances and taxes. I did my taxes for years - I even went to H&R block to have them do my taxes and went home right afterward and input my info on Turbo Tax to see which would give me the better refund. Turbo tax saved me more so I kept using it thinking it's the cheapest best thing I can do for my personal and business taxes. Every year tax time was a huge source of stress for me (getting all the paperwork together and not understanding some of the questions they were asking); then I got married and doing taxes seemed even more daunting. I decided to try and see if it was worth having a CPA do our taxes. Gary was recommended to us and our lives have literally changed for the better since then! He has not only helped us get a better refund than Turbo Tax, he has helped us find new ways to save money (since both my husband and I primarily have 1099s). He advises us on better ways to organize and structure our businesses and to think about new ways of saving money in the future. Every year when April rolls around, my stress level has decreased exponentially. I can't imagine having anyone else do our taxes. He's become more than a tax man to us, but a friend. He truly is an asset to our lives!

A really great experience. Patrick is very knowledgeable and personable, even enthusiastic. He helped me understand that, as an Enrolled Agent licensed by the US Treasury Dept. he is recognized by the IRS for his expertise. So he is able to effectively offer the same tax prep service as a CPA but much cheaper. I did not know that you can look online for average prices on tax prep. He is very cost competitive. I will use him again next year.

Cheryl Fischbach has performed a variety of services for us from basic accounting needs to preparation of business formation documents. Her vast knowledge and experience are exceptional! Each year she prepares and summarizes our year-end financial data for the CPA. She also works with our CPA to provide any needed input or additional information for the preparation of our income tax returns. Thanks to Cheryl’s assistance and training in the setup of QuickBooks, we are able to perform basic bookkeeping tasks, and then depend on her to perform reconciliations and financial reporting. Based on our limited bookkeeping and accounting knowledge we can count on her to answer any questions or to give help any time it’s needed. Cheryl really makes it easy to focus on what we do best.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.
