FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
The average DJ will charge anywhere from $75-$150 an hour. This typically does not include set-up, tear down, or the equipment itself. Many DJs undercut good/professional DJs and allow you to think that you will get a great service for low cost. BUYER BEWARE. These DJs will show up with two 10 inch speakers and have no ability to mix music. If your DJ provides a service for $25 and hour, be warned that it will not be a memorable event.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I grew up in the west coast and spent 6 years in graduate school on the east coast. I consider myself very diverse when it comes to music. In addition, my psychology background has really empowered me to read the crowds dynamics during my performances. Understanding the dynamic on the dancefloor and whether the audience is having a good time requires a keen sense of behaviors. If no one is dancing, change it up, if the crowd is singing and jumping for joy, you have hit their sweet spot. Also, playing throwbacks is a must. Again, as a psychologist, I understand that playing popular throwbacks will ignite memories from previous years that will stir a multitude of emotions and ultimately enhance your dancing experience.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
I am usually asked to mix music and create a fun atmosphere, but I can do more than just that. During weddings for example, I stay on schedule since there may be so many items (i.e., traditions) on the itinerary. I have great ideas for weddings that may not have been thought of by others. For example, at dinner, I have games that require volunteers (ie., guests) and keep the audience involved.
