John is the best!! If you do not hire him you are an idiot. John installed my base trim, hung a door and install iron supports for a granite counter top to a masonry wall. He was on time and on task. He doesn't charge enough and you should pay him extra anyway.

One word describes Kyle - FANTASTIC! We hired Kyle to install 2 ceiling fans and a wall sconce. His rates were great and his skills were even better! When we found out he could do more than install some fans, we asked him to install some faucets and texture and paint a wall and we were not disappointed! He worked fast but his work was quality! We were so pleased! We will definitely use him again and I highly recommend him! He won't disappoint you.

David's team is a high energy happy group that work quickly and do excellent work. I hired them to remove popcorn ceiling, texture and paint. They also did some dry wall patches to remove wired speakers in my kitchen, master bedroom, family room. They did a really good job and came back to finish up a couple of rough places after I'd paid them. I was impressed with their timeliness and quick work. For the most part, they were right on schedule. I think the highest compliment I can pay them, is to be willing to have them do more work. The attached pictures show ceiling texture, sealed and painted flat after popcorn removal. Not much to see, but that's what you'd want.

I hired Nick to remove the popcorn ceilings in my new house. From the start, Nick was quick to respond to my request for a quote. When we met at my house for him to look at the job, he gave me a good sense of what needed to be done and was incredibly friendly. The ceilings had been painted. So, he took great care to make sure that he didn't mess up the wall paint while he was pulling down the painted popcorn. While the work took longer than he originally estimated (5.5 days instead of 3), the ceilings looked great and he came over to touch up a few spots I noticed. The only downside was that the process itself is very messy. Even though Nick cleaned the floors, we have had to mop a few times to get up the dust. I did appreciate that he power washed my driveway to remove the inevitable white dust that comes with the removal of the ceilings. Nick does great work at a good price, and I would (and have) recommend him again.

Ralph was very professional and reliable. I've hired him on multiple occasions, to name a few he built a patio wall and walkway for our front patio in our former home and most recently built an outdoor shed in our current home with which we are very pleased. He is very experienced, creative, and reasonable, I'd highly recommend him for any projects large or small.

Work was well done. My wall now has a new dog door and not a broken one! Not all the tools needed for the work were on the truck so Mr Fix It had to go get what he needed which took some time. Check out the before and after.

We have found our drywall expert. Working with Efren has been a total pleasure. He prides himself on delivering what he has communicated and makes sure that you are happy every step of the way. He worked to take our kitchen and living room, with 11ft walls, from a medium orange peel to a completely flat and smooth finish. We are thrilled with the results and excited about how he transformed our walls. I would not hesitate to use him again in the future.

Venus Homes recently remodeled two of my bathrooms, added an additional full bath, replaced all my plumbing, added a hallway, and tiled my entire house...in less than a month. Narsay was professional, punctual, and was precise in his project coordination. He was able to get a tile guy, electrician, plumber, and drywall guy all to work in perfect order to get the job done cleanly and quickly. The crew was respectful of my house and honest. I had to give them full access to my house while I was at work and nothing ever went missing or was used without my permission. (They never even touched something as small as the thermostat). The entire job was done quickly and well. The tile guy was amazing. His lines and cuts are as good as I've seen. Narsay was communicative and proactive in identifying the best way to make the changes I wanted. I had 3 bids for this project and Narsay was the most positive and enthusiastic of the three. He was genuinely excited and confident about this project. He followed through and made good on his word. There were no surprises or additional costs. Narsay did what he quoted and was reasonable and fair. Multiple friends have requested Narsay's number now that they have seen his work. I highly recommend Venus Homes for your project. I will add photos when I'm done putting in the right furniture and painting the walls. Rob

Morgan was a pleasure to talk with on the phone - she quickly found a specialist in my area for the same day. Alex came within about an hour after I called him. Immediately cleared off the stuff that was damaged by water and set up dehumidifier, fan, and applied treatment. Came back on the third day to wrap everything up. The area was completely dry and ready for drywall repair. It was a pleasure working with Alex. I would definitely hire them again. The price was very reasonable.

I wish that I was allowed to select all categories to review because they were awesome! Helped me out when I truly needed them. He saw a young family in distress and helped us out tremendously. Another company dropped the ball and Misael came to our rescue and saved the day. He hung dry wall and textured and finished it and installed can lighting. He was beyond punctual. He was flexible and always did what he said he would do. He even cane at 6 am when we really needed him to stay on schedule. He worked extremely hard and was honest and fair throughout the job. His work was excellent and the finished product looks great. I liked how he was upfront and honest and always on time. He was professional and I trusted him. Please hire him folks. He really deserves it and I cannot thank him enough for everything he did for us. I plan to hire him again to do more. Great great guy and company!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
