What tools do you need to repair drywall?

To repair drywall, you need up to several tools and materials. For example, you may need a drill to insert drywall screws and boreholes. A drywall saw or utility knife is perfect for cutting and shaping drywall, and don’t forget your tape measure and pencil. Drywall and taping knives are also essential.

For materials, you’ll likely need construction adhesive, drywall tape, drywall screws, masking tape and joint compound.

If you don’t have these tools — and you don’t want to spend money on them — contact a drywall repair professional instead of doing it yourself.

Do drywall contractors need a license?

Pros may need to obtain a license to fix and install drywall. It’s always worth checking with your local government about whether a drywall company or contractor has to be licensed before they work on your project.

Who do I hire to install or repair drywall?

A general contractor, handyman or a drywall contractor (or company) can usually install and repair drywall. It’s recommended that you call one of these types of pros when your drywall needs to be repaired, such as after a plumber or electrician has completed their work.

Look up local pros online and compare their profiles, paying extra attention to their ratings, reviews, experience and list of services. Contact three to five pros to get cost estimates for your project.

Do drywall contractors do insulation?

A drywall contractor focuses on drywall. If you want to install insulation (or upgrade your existing installation), you should hire an insulation contractor. It's possible that your drywall contractor may be able to offer basic insulation services, but for more advanced insulation installation (such as spray foam), go with a professional who specializes in this.

How do I find a good drywall contractor?

The best way to find a good drywall contractor is by searching for the top-rated contractors near you on Thumbtack. View their ratings, and read their reviews to see how they did on past drywall projects. Pay attention to the photos uploaded by the customers and contractors, so you can analyze their quality of work.

Excellent craftsmanship with a fair price.. Was available within 2 days and did a great job repairing a section of my drywall after a leak. He was going to be running late and showed up at the updated time which he communicated ahead of time so we appreciated the heads up and follow through. Would definitely hire again.

Keala did a ceiling drywall repair for me, with texture and paint and it looks great. He was quick to respond with communication, which I appreciated. I was very impressed with how much effort he put into making sure everything was properly covered and protected (I’ve had issues with that with others I’ve worked with). Very pleased with the job he did. Would definitely hire again.

I originally had two holes in the drywall in 2 separate rooms in my home. Carnell was prompt in his response to the project I had posted. He showed up to my house when he said he would, and fixed the first hole and only charged me the cost of the metal plate to put over the hole, as I had changed my mind and decided that would be better since it is where a door would keep banging into the drywall even if I fixed it. For the second hole, which is in my window seat, I changed my mind and asked him to leave it and then to quote me a price to demo the whole thing and build storage into the window seat.... so that project basically went from a small hole repair to a potential window seat remodel. After showing up and cutting through one side, we discovered that due to the structure and contents of the existing interior and of the window seat, Carnell was unable to complete the remodel. So, instead, he patched the hole that he had created. It looks great, and I have to mention that Carnell was extremely polite and professional the entire time. In fact, in between the two visits, since it was over the holidays, he brought a bag of Christmas goodies for me and my daughter, which was a lovely touch.
