"The massage therapist arrived in a timely fashion, and was extremely knowledgeable. I had a huge knot in my neck that was extremely uncomfortable, and Brandon zeroed in on the problem area and helped out a lot. Would hire again."

"Jason is gifted. He understands light, shadow, line and movement. He sees art even in mundane settings. He is professional and honest. He directs well and makes you feel comfortable. He's able to frame finished images in his mind before he even clicks the camera. I don't know how he does that. Jason is incredibly talented, has a positive personality and a good man."

"Leo has been my personal trainer for nearly 16 years. During that time, his instruction has been professional, caring, and geared to my personal needs and capabilities. I feel that my overall health, strength, stability, and knowledge that I have about my own physical abilities are due in large part to my association with Leo. I appreciate his accommodating my schedule, the flexibility of our sessions, and the comfortable, friendly vibe of our time together. He not only works on strength training, but is also able to incorporate core work, balance, compound exercises, hand/eye coordination, flexibility, endurance, and nutrition information, all with encouragement and positive reinforcement."

"Organic Escape is the best massage I've ever had. Felt SO relaxed afterwards. Luis is very kind and attentive. Beyond massage, Organic Escape offers neuromuscular therapy to heal injuries and conditions like carpal tunnel and TMJ. Luis does an excellent job educating you about how the body works and teaches you how to counteract the negative habits we form in our daily lives, such as "text neck.""

"Lama Jigme Tenzin has a powerful gift of Tibetan Buddhist healing energy that he is able to transmit during treatments. The effects of his spiritual massage reach levels way beyond traditional massage. Jigme's gift most certainly developed as a result of years living and training as a Buddhist monk and Lama. We are fortunate he came to the West and is offering this deeply beneficial, one-of-a-kind service. His treatments reach way beyond the physical body, and leave you feeling a deeper connection to the Spirit within. Highly recommended. Julie Lilly-Belote and William Belote"

"It was clear from the beginning that Amy is a true expert on body wellness. She took the time to talk with me about my objectives and provided some helpful feedback and suggestions above and beyond the great massage she gave. She uses multiple methods based on the individual. I had been having a headache for days prior to the massage and it's been gone since this massage. It's been so difficult to find a good therapeutic massage and I'm grateful to have found Amy."

"This has definitely helped a lot more than any physical therapy session ever has. My hamstrings feel a lot better now than they did before the massage. Highly recommend seeing him for muscle injuries if you play a sport."

"Following a car accident two years ago, I suffer with acute pain in my upper spine daily - sometimes the pain is so disabling I have been unable to work. I have tried many forms of treatment and therapy to reduce the injury/pain and have occasionally found temporary relief - but ultimately I still always had some degree of pain and within a few hours the agony would be back. Then I found Chris. After my first session with Chris I was completely pain free for the first time in two years. I repeat - completely pain free. And the days following were like being reborn again. I felt energized, invigorated and joyful. My whole system was running on empty because all my energy had been invested in dealing with pain 24/7. Suddenly, I was completely in tune with body again and could run, skip and play like I did years ago. Chris is not just a masseuse - he is a total body therapist, using many different forms of massage and physical therapy designed for each of his clients individual needs. He is a total professional and an impeccable gentleman. I highly recommend him and feel sure that with continued treatments I will be able to live my life again to the full. I feel blessed to have found someone with such skills, instinct and talent. Extraordinary and amazing in the true meaning of the words. Thank you Chris. "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
