I had a water leak issue that was coming through my downstairs ceiling. Issue was due to a backed up shower drain line. Found Vyron on Thumbtack and he contacted that evening to set a time to come by an assess the job. I also needed base Board for the downstairs as well as reinstalling tile in 4 spots from a previous radiant floor heating leak. Vyron was right on time. His quote was very reasonable so I hired him. The time Vyron arranged to begin my repairs was again, right on time. He immediately began his work with a crew. He unclogged the shower drain, removed the damaged drywall and reinstalled new drywall. Installed all the base board and reinstalled the tile. He quoted a time frame of 6-8 hours. He completed everything in 7 hours. He and his crew were very clean and organized. Vyron is professional and friendly. I highly recommend Vyron Salinas. Thanks Brett Larson

Gleo assisted with multiple projects to prep my home for sale. With little over 2 weeks to get repairs and enhancements completed, Gleo responded in a timely manner and dropped by to assess the job. I own an older condo with pretty outdated systems - doorbell mechanism, ceiling fan/light remote fixtures and AC. Thus, it was challenging trying to find out how things were connected and installed and where they were located. Gleo had to do a lot of extra research and testing to find the source of the issues. He accomplished this all through diligence, skill and the desire to do a good job. I was very pleased with the results stemming from the repairs he made. From start to finish, Gleo gave me the full confidence that he would go above and beyond to get the job done. His pricing for services are beyond fair despite the fact that spent multiple evenings and hours to perfect and fulfill the required services. Not only will you find a skilled, professional contractor but a fair, good-natured individual with a heart of gold. Thank you, Gleo!!!

Hector and Francisco are not just amazing professional painters, they are lifesavers. Renovating our condo has taken so long and been so expensive that we were going to wait on new baseboards and do most of the painting ourselves. I contacted Hector just about painting the ceiling and texturing a couple places that had been newly dry walled during renovations. But after seeing Hector and Francisco work, their neat careful painting and having gotten such a reasonable bid, we ended up with freshly painted ceilings, new baseboards all freshly painted, and newly painted walls. And the texturing job, which I know is not easy was flawless - because of the renovation, there were places it needed to be redone, places where the drywall mud wasn’t even, and a wall niche that was cut out but not much more. Hector and Francisco did a beautiful job - you could tell they have pride in their work. I cannot believe I found people so good, so pleasant, so professional. I’ll hire Hector anytime I have painting to be done. And I recommend him highly! Thanks to Hector and Francisco, I have a home I can live in and be proud of.

I met Renato through my realtor. He made several repairs for me in the bathroom which included drywall. Did a fantastic job painting most of the house both upstairs and down. I also asked him to do a few repairs that would have been difficult for most, but Renato took care of them easily. He is my new best friend! I would highly recommend Renato

I'm a first time homeowner, and Mauricio and his team offered quality and timely work and excellent customer service. He did interior painting as well as some "handyman" tasks around our home. Mauricio's work is detailed oriented, and he comes through on all commitments and even takes the extra step to make sure you are satisfied with his work/service. His team is honest and hard working. He will be my go-to from now on.d I recommend!

Chris was as professional as they come. Excellent (and fast response), on-time arrival, and impeccable workmanship. The walls we were painting over were quite dark and it took an extra layer of paint - Chris took the initiative (and extra time) to do right by the job and apply a full second coat (despite only having quoted for one). He truly takes pride in his work and I will be calling him first for any future work. Thank you, Chris!

We had a roof leak and Marlon patched the ceiling. After the roof was repaired, Marlon came to patch the ceiling. We found some water around the area and called the roofer. Marlon waited patiently for the roofer and had to come back again after the roofer could find the time to fix another source of leak. Marlon was always courteous and flexible. I would highly recommend him for doing a good job and going out of the way to help.

Eduardo and Jose were phenomenal, period. They painted our home in the Inner Sunset, and did a spectacular job. I am a very picky diva, and I am so very happy - thrilled - with their work. Eduardo and Jose sourced the scaffolding and even found us a roofer on very short notice when we agreed the roofing over our bay windows was in very poor condition. There were things I wanted - color and paint type and finish type - and Jose collaborated with me on everything. He did not hesitate to explain some technical elements of which I was unaware. I have had a lot of experience with painters, and I am adamant about using Benjamin Moore paint only. I have had instances where the painters swap in cheap paint even though I have specified exactly what I want. (It is absolutely imperative to use high quality paint or one is simply wasting money on labor.) Well, Eduardo and Jose are also firm believers in Benjamin Moore products, so it was a very happy collaboration!! Everything was very reasonable priced and transparent. The prep work was outstanding. This is a highly professional team, but also very friendly. Do not hesitate to hire them! I plan to ask for more services in the future! See photos below, the tan and brown on the left is the before photo, the photo on the right in pearl grey, deep brown, and blue lake is the after photo. The photos really do not do the house justice... the lustre and richness of the new paint over properly prepared surfaces - it is just gorgeous. Thank you so much, Eduardo and Jose!

Juan remodeled our unfinished attic space (about 700+ sq ft) from top to bottom and turned it into a new office studio. He laid out the framework, ran electrical wires, put up insulation and drywall, painted and stained, added window trim, installed hardwood flooring and baseboards, and added storage cabinets. He was able to finish our attic in three weeks, and for a very reasonable price. He is a very hard worker, and really creative with his solutions. He always had helpful advice for me when I wasn't sure what decisions to make. He is now our go to contractor when we need work done around the house. I highly recommend him for his work quality, professional etiquette, and ease of communication. I am very happy with the work he is done, and can't wait to work with him again.

We had water damage so parts of the ceiling and walls were removed. Within a week they were able to come out and start the process of fixing the problems. After drywall, texture, paint, and finishing touches everything is back to normal. They were very accommodating when we requested other things to be done and great at getting everything done in a timely fashion. Matt and José are the best!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
