Sergey couldn't fix my issue but he was really nice, seemed very competent and didn't charge me for the job since the repair wasn't complete. It was a tough repair so I'd still hire Sergey for other projects.

Harp and his team did an excellent job! "I was very impressed with this company from start to finish. They communicated professionally throughout the duration of the project, etc." I can see why they have a high rating. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a tv and projector mounting, dry wall repair and general house repair, top quality job for a very fair price.

Jose did excellent work, and for by far the best price! I got two other quotes to replace my garbage disposal + p trap pipes, and Jose's price was half that of the others. He's an honest guy - unlike the other plumbers, he didn't overcharge me for the parts (he even showed me the original receipt). On top of all of that, he was responsive to my messages, showed up right on time and was very professional. He answered all of my questions, and even taught me how to reset/repair the garbage disposal for the future. No doubt I'll be using him for all of my future plumbing needs.

Fast response to come out and review a non urgent repair (slow leaking pipe). Very easy to schedule using the app and showed up on time. Booked a few weeks later to do the repair. Nice work and would call again for other repairs.

Oscar was immediately responsive to a backed up sewage problem we had. We texted him on a Sunday night and he was there first thing on Monday morning. He addressed the immediate problem and then also addressed another problem that we had with a leaky toilet. His work was extremely thorough and he continued to inform me of what he was finding and doing to repair the leak. His professionalism was excellent and reinforced that we would continue using him for future work. Highly recommended!

Omar was really quick to submit a fair quote and offered to show up within hours of me putting up the job! I had actually expected to wait a whole week. He came promptly when he said he would (within 15 min) and brought all his own tools with him. He got the job (installing a bidet) done quickly and with no mess. If I have any future home repair / upgrades, I’ll definitely go with Omar again!

Max provided an amazing service. Everything about his was professional, friendly, capable and service oriented. His charge was extremely reasonable for the work he did. Not only did he effectively fix my furnace, he also did a great job as a plumber. I really appreciate that he made it a fixed price job - so I knew exactly how much my charge was going to be, and everything was completely transparent. There were several cases where he could have charged me more, or suggested a higher priced service, but he didn't. Max was outstanding both in his capability and service level. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone!

My husband and I had to renovate the home for AIRBNB and we had to get everything organize in a timely manner. Davis showed up promptly to help us clean the house and redo the rooms. He also went out of his way to assist us with prepping the living room. We totally recommend him for anyone who needs a reliable handyman.

We were thrilled with M.P. Movers. Marquis Philip was responsive to messages, showed up on time, moved things from one place and Ikea to our home 1-1/2 hours away and assembled an Ikea day bed. He is reliable, a hard worker and a very nice guy. He did an excellent job. We would hire him again, and will refer him to others.

I was really happy with this engagement. From first contact here on Thumbtack, to visiting the home for an estimate--the team smoothed and repainted a room, hallway, and stairway in my home--to their conduct onsite (my home) and quality of work. All of it really, I'm beyond words. I'm so happy they did more than just throw another layer of paint onto my hundred year-old Victorian. No, this team smoothed the walls, sanded and did detail work on the trim, brought their own supplies to protect my furniture, and, well, were professionals through and through. The space looks beautiful. Thank you. Really.

Fantastic experience with Salamat. I hired him to assist with some shelving installation, and he was punctual, communicative, and asked the right questions throughout the project to make sure it was done perfectly. Where I had questions about how to proceed, he was ready with helpful suggestions. He was so quick and efficient that we ended up having him assist with a few other repairs around the home, and are already planning future projects that we’ll hire him for. Highly recommended!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
